The call

Wayflyer keeps growing revenue while losses persist, as Shopify Capital and cheaper AI-driven underwriting squeeze the revenue-financing sector it operates in.

Wayflyer gives quick loans to e-commerce business owners based on their sales data, making money when borrowers repay with a cut of future revenue. Rivals like Shopify Capital have a huge advantage because they sit right inside Shopify's platform where merchants already shop, making the loan offer frictionless and hard to refuse. Wayflyer does own valuable things: detailed repayment records from past loans, relationships with banks that fund its lending, and official licenses to lend. These things are hard to copy quickly. However, the whole lending-to-merchants business is getting squeezed as competition heats up and profit margins shrink industry-wide; other lenders have already had to shrink or sell. Wayflyer is growing revenue fast but burning through roughly 50 cents of every dollar it earns, and its value has been stuck for four years even as it raises more money. The critical test will be whether Wayflyer can shrink those losses while the market is consolidating, and whether the big funding facility backing its loans gets renewed in 2028 without trouble.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative and agentic AI underwriting tools. AI could automate merchant risk scoring and cash-flow analysis, but Wayflyer's edge sits in capital access and lending licenses, not the algorithm. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Shopify Capital. Shopify Capital offers instant, embedded funding inside checkout on the largest merchant channel, undercutting Wayflyer's separate application process. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Proprietary repayment data, non-bank lending licenses, and a $250M ATLAS warehouse facility that funds loans AI tools alone cannot replicate.
What would change this call
FY2025 Irish accounts (due late 2026) show pre-tax loss vs revenue growth. Narrowing losses alongside 50% growth signals recovering health; stalled losses signal ongoing strain.
ATLAS SP Partners $250M facility renewal decision in Feb 2028. Renewal signals credit-market confidence in Wayflyer's loan book; non-renewal signals funding risk.
Whether Outfund or Capchase restructure or exit RBF like Clearco, Uncapped, Pipe did. Further peer exits would confirm sector-wide margin compression is squeezing all RBF lenders.

Named risks
  • Persistent losses (€48M FY2024) despite 50% revenue growth, unclear if FY2025 narrows the gap. Severity: high
  • Shopify Capital's embedded, zero-friction financing directly competes for same merchant base. Severity: high
  • Sector-wide RBF margin compression as peers Clearco, Uncapped, Pipe exit or restructure. Severity: medium
  • Valuation frozen at $1.6B since February 2022 with no new equity round since. Severity: medium
  • ATLAS SP Partners $250M facility (Feb 2026) is only two years; renewal in 2028 depends on credit-market confidence. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Wayflyer profitable in 2026?
No. Wayflyer's Irish filings show a €48M pre-tax loss on €95.2M revenue for FY2024, reported November 26, 2024. FY2025 accounts, due late 2026, will show whether the loss narrowed alongside continued revenue growth.
