The call

WealthNavi's independence ended with the MUFG buyout; its next test is whether MUFG's 2027 restructuring keeps the brand or folds it in.

WealthNavi manages over 2 trillion yen for about 460,000 customers in Japan using computer algorithms to invest their money. It was bought by MUFG Bank in 2025, so it is now part of a giant bank rather than an independent company. The hardest thing for a rival to copy is the special license the government gave WealthNavi to manage investments and the fact that it can reach customers through MUFG's existing bank branches. AI tools could make basic investment advice cheaper, but they cannot get the government license or the bank's customer list. The big unknown is whether MUFG will keep WealthNavi as its own brand and team or fold it into a new digital company MUFG is planning for 2027. If other banks that worked with WealthNavi before the deal stop sending customers to it, that would signal MUFG is replacing it with something else.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI advisory tools and AI-driven portfolio apps. AI can copy WealthNavi's portfolio logic and content, but can't get its discretionary-investment license or bank shelf space. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: MUFG's planned FY2027 digital asset formation company. MUFG, now the sole owner, is building a new group entity that could absorb WealthNavi's brand, team, and product line. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Holds a discretionary-investment license and sits inside MUFG's bank distribution network, both hard for any AI tool to replicate.
What would change this call
MUFG launches its FY2027 digital asset formation company and reveals WealthNavi's brand/team placement. Shows whether WealthNavi keeps independent identity or is absorbed into a new MUFG entity.
Sony Bank, au Jibun Bank, Aeon Bank, or Chiba Bank end their WealthNavi white-label partnership. Would show non-MUFG distribution partners are exiting after the MUFG acquisition.
SBI Securities or Rakuten Securities launches a robo-advisor priced meaningfully below WealthNavi's 1.1% fee. Would show direct fee-based competition drawing customers away from WealthNavi.
