The call

Wealthsimple keeps growing fast on the same low-fee model banks haven't matched, while AI chat tools loom as a slower-moving question about the value of paid advice.

Wealthsimple lets regular people invest and manage money through an app with low fees, and it is profitable and adding customers quickly. The big Canadian banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) cannot easily copy it because they make too much money from higher fees and would confuse their own customers, and no AI company can instantly get the licenses and permissions the Canadian government requires to hold customer money. The one thing that could change everything is if a foreign company like Questrade or Webull gets approved to operate in Canada and starts offering the same low-cost service to Canadians.

Why
01
AI pressure: General-purpose AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini) offering free portfolio and tax guidance. Free AI chat advice could erode the case for paying any advisory fee, even Wealthsimple's low one. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Big Five Canadian Banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC). Banks earn 1.5 to 2.5 percent on mutual funds and have not matched Wealthsimple's low fees in over a decade. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. CIRO dealer registration, CDIC/CIPF custody, and a payments license that AI labs and foreign entrants can't just copy.
What would change this call
Wealthsimple's August 2026 quarterly update on AUA growth rate. Shows whether the 71% YoY growth trajectory is sustaining or stalling.
Webull or Moomoo obtaining CIRO registration and launching in Canada. Would indicate a foreign low-cost entrant clearing the regulatory moat.
Any Big Five bank (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) cutting mutual-fund fees to match Wealthsimple. Would show an incumbent willing to sacrifice margin to compete directly.

Questions people ask
Is Wealthsimple profitable in 2026?
Wealthsimple stated it was profitable in 2024 and remains profitable in 2025, per its October 27, 2025 announcement of a CA$750 million equity round at a CA$10 billion post-money valuation. No full financials are publicly disclosed, but the company reaffirmed profitability alongside 71% YoY AUA growth reported May 2026.
Who owns Wealthsimple?
Power Corporation of Canada is the majority owner, holding an aggregated ~52.4% undiluted stake across Power Financial, IGM Financial, and its Portag3/Sagard platform. Other investors include Dragoneer, GIC, CPP Investments, ICONIQ, Greylock, and Meritech following the October 2025 CA$750 million raise.
Could AI replace Wealthsimple's core business?
Unlikely soon: Wealthsimple's core function relies on CIRO regulatory licensing, CDIC/CIPF custody, and a payments license that AI labs cannot replicate. Its AI assistant Willow handles support and onboarding, but the licensed dealer/custodian relationship and 3.4 million client dataset remain the moat as of mid-2026.
Is Wealthsimple growing or losing customers in 2026?
Growing: Wealthsimple's client base rose from 2.6 million at end of 2024 to 3.4 million by March 2026, with over 4 million total users cited by mid-2026. Assets under administration hit CA$124.8 billion in Q1 2026, up 71% year-over-year.
Who is Wealthsimple's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Questrade/Questwealth is Wealthsimple's closest low-fee peer, alongside bank-backed robos like RBC InvestEase and BMO SmartFolio. The Big Five Canadian banks dominate overall AUM but are structurally deterred from matching Wealthsimple's fee model due to their own high-margin mutual fund business, as of 2026.
Will Wealthsimple go public?
CEO Michael Katchen told BNN Bloomberg on October 29, 2025 that Wealthsimple intends to go public eventually, but no timeline has been set. The company remains private as of mid-2026, having just closed a CA$750 million round at a CA$10 billion valuation.
