The call

Weaviate has real open-source reach but its core product is being absorbed by bigger databases and by the AI platforms it depends on.

Weaviate is an open-source database built to store and search AI data vectors, with millions of downloads and paying customers. But the job it does is getting easier for others to copy: MongoDB and Postgres added vector search to their existing products, and AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are building retrieval and memory directly into their platforms, so customers have less reason to buy a standalone tool. The company is betting on a new focus around AI agent memory (called Engram), but it is unproven, and its market share has dropped in half over one year, which suggests the shift may come too late or not work at all.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Anthropic (built-in retrieval and memory in their platforms). Model providers add native file search and memory so developers skip a separate vector database entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: MongoDB Atlas Vector Search, Elastic, AWS OpenSearch, Postgres pgvector. Databases teams already run now bundle vector search for free, cutting the reason to add Weaviate. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large open-source developer base, 20M+ downloads, that still has to be turned into paying enterprise lock-in.
What would change this call
Ramp vendor-tracking share for Weaviate over next 2-3 quarters. Whether the drop from ~30% to 13% share continues or stabilizes.
Terms of Weaviate's next funding round after the flat $200M Series C. Whether investors still value the company at or above prior rounds.
Public case studies or design partners naming Engram/Query Agent in production. Whether the agent-memory pivot is gaining real enterprise adoption.

Named risks
  • Adoption share nearly halved from 30% to 13% in about 14 months per Ramp tracking. Severity: high
  • Valuation flat at $200M across two funding rounds, Series B 2023 to Series C 2025. Severity: medium
  • Transformation Agent already sunset less than a year after March 2025 launch, signals strategic churn. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Weaviate profitable in 2026?
Weaviate has not disclosed profitability. Third-party revenue estimates range widely from $12.3M (Getlatka, Oct 2024) to $37.5M (ZoomInfo, July 2026), all unaudited aggregator estimates, not company-confirmed figures. No profitability claim exists in public sources as of July 2026.
Who owns Weaviate?
Weaviate is privately held and VC-backed, with no parent company. Investors include Index Ventures, Battery Ventures, NEA, Cortical Ventures, Zetta Venture Partners, and ING Ventures, plus a strategic investment from Ricoh's RICOH Innovation Fund announced June 16, 2026.
Is Weaviate losing market share?
Yes. Vendor-tracking site Ramp reports Weaviate's adoption share fell from roughly 30% in May 2025 to 13% in July 2026, dropping the company to #3 rank among vector database vendors, a near-halving in about 14 months.
Could AI replace Weaviate's core product?
Weaviate's core vector search is being commoditized: MongoDB Atlas, Elasticsearch, AWS OpenSearch, and Postgres pgvector now bundle vector search, while OpenAI and Anthropic ship native file search and memory features directly in their platforms as of 2025-2026, per company documentation.
Is Weaviate's valuation growing?
No. Weaviate's valuation has stayed flat at $200M across two funding rounds: the $50M Series B led by Index Ventures in April 2023 and the $50M Series C led by Battery Ventures and Zetta Venture Partners closed October 10, 2025.
Who is Weaviate's biggest competitor?
Weaviate faces pressure from two directions: general-purpose databases like MongoDB Atlas Vector Search, Elasticsearch, and AWS OpenSearch that bolted on vector search, and purpose-built rivals Pinecone, Qdrant, and Milvus/Zilliz, per market comparisons through mid-2026.
