The call

WeTransfer keeps a large user base out of habit while its owner squeezes margins and new rivals, including its own co-founder's Boomerang, test whether that habit holds.

WeTransfer lets people send large files easily, mostly to creative professionals who got used to the brand. But Dropbox, Google, and Microsoft all do the same thing now, and they have way more resources and users. The real problem is that WeTransfer's owner (Bending Spoons) is raising prices, shrinking the free version, and laying off most of the staff, which erodes the very thing that made people stick with it. What could change everything: if Dropbox or Google adds smart AI features that organize files automatically, WeTransfer could fall further behind since it intentionally does not use AI on user files.

Why
01
AI pressure: Dropbox Dash. Dropbox's AI file search and organization tool is live while WeTransfer still avoids AI on user content. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Dropbox Transfer, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive. Free large-file sending is already built into Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, covering WeTransfer's main use case. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Habit and brand recognition among photographers and filmmakers who default to WeTransfer without thinking.
What would change this call
Boomerang's user/download numbers reported within 12 months of its Dec 2025 launch. Shows whether WeTransfer's creative-pro base is defecting to a rival built by its own co-founder.
Another WeTransfer price hike, free-tier cut, or layoff round announced by Bending Spoons. Confirms parent is extracting margin rather than reinvesting, weakening the brand's remaining appeal.
Dropbox or Google publicly marketing Transfer/Drive features to photographers or filmmakers. Shows big incumbents targeting WeTransfer's core creative-professional niche directly.
Key numbers

Named risks
  • Bending Spoons extraction strategy (price hikes, staff cuts) may continue post-IPO scrutiny. Severity: high
  • Recurring AI/ToS backlash risk given parent's AI ambitions after July 2025 incident. Severity: medium
  • Brand loyalty erosion evidenced by co-founder's competing Boomerang launch. Severity: medium
  • No enterprise-grade compliance certifications versus MASV/Aspera limits studio-grade market access. Severity: medium
  • Financial reporting inconsistency across sources makes true revenue/profitability unverifiable. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is WeTransfer profitable in 2026?
No confirmed profit figures are public. Third-party analysis (36kr) estimates monthly revenue rose from about $900K in January 2025 to over $4M by April 2026 under Bending Spoons' monetization push, but this is an analytical estimate, not a filed financial statement.
Did WeTransfer have layoffs?
Yes. In September 2024, new owner Bending Spoons announced plans to cut roughly 75% of WeTransfer's staff, about 260 people, shrinking headcount from an estimated 350-405 employees pre-acquisition to roughly 70-90 by mid-2026.
Who owns WeTransfer now?
WeTransfer has been wholly owned by Italian tech conglomerate Bending Spoons since the acquisition closed in July 2024. Bending Spoons itself went public on Nasdaq under ticker BSP on July 1, 2026, raising $1.68 billion.
Who is WeTransfer's biggest competitor?
Dropbox Transfer, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive already replicate WeTransfer's no-login link mechanic. A newer direct threat is Boomerang, launched in December 2025 by WeTransfer co-founder Nalden as an ad-free, non-AI-training alternative aimed at disaffected WeTransfer users.
Could AI replace WeTransfer?
WeTransfer's core file-transfer function has low AI displacement risk, but the company explicitly states as of July 15, 2025 that it does not use machine learning on user content, making it a laggard versus Dropbox, which had already shipped its AI-powered Dash search product.
Is WeTransfer losing users to alternatives?
Signs point that way. In December 2024 WeTransfer added its first-ever free-plan cap of 10 transfers/3GB monthly and cut link validity from 7 to 3 days, and by December 2025 its own co-founder launched Boomerang explicitly to catch users leaving over these changes.
