The call

Wheel's clinician network keeps AI and software-only rivals out, but a 2022 valuation and dependence on Amazon staying a customer, not a competitor, leave it exposed.

Wheel is a service that links artificial intelligence tools to actual licensed doctors who can make medical decisions and sign off on care. It is not totally safe from competition because it relies on having doctors and following rules, which Teladoc Health and Amazon could both do if they wanted to, even though they currently do other things in healthcare. The one thing that matters most is whether Amazon, which already works with Wheel and owns its own pharmacy, decides to build its own version of Wheel's doctor-connection system in the next year; if Amazon moves first, Wheel's advantage disappears.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native diagnostic and triage tools (e.g. AI health agents from labs like OpenAI or Anthropic-backed startups). AI can triage symptoms, but prescribing and licensed care still require Wheel's human clinicians, so full replacement stays blocked for now. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Amazon. Amazon Clinic and Amazon Pharmacy already run on Wheel, but Amazon could build its own clinician-execution layer instead of renewing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A licensed, compliant clinician network across all 50 states that AI-only or pure-software rivals cannot legally replicate overnight.
What would change this call
Amazon renews or expands its Wheel partnership versus building an internal clinician-execution layer. Shows whether Wheel's largest model-threat partner stays a customer or turns competitor.
Teladoc Health ships a competing clinical-action-layer infrastructure product for AI-native health brands. Shows the soft incumbent barrier has failed and Teladoc is directly copying Wheel's model.
Wheel closes a new priced funding round at flat or higher than the $1.01B 2022 valuation. Shows investor confidence has held despite 4.5 years without a new round.
Key numbers
  • $1.01B valuation at Series C close (2022-01-19)
  • Over 6 million virtual care visits on platform (2025-03)
  • $216M total funding raised since 2018 (2022-01-19)
Named risks
  • No priced funding round confirmed since January 2022, leaving valuation 4.5 years stale amid sector down-rounds. Severity: high
  • Key partner Amazon could build an internal clinical-execution layer and go direct, ending the partnership. Severity: high
  • Revenue and headcount figures are inconsistent and largely unverified across data providers. Severity: medium
  • Teladoc could replicate Wheel's B2B infrastructure model if incentivized, eroding differentiation. Severity: medium
  • GLP-1 and hormone-therapy volume, a key growth driver, is exposed to regulatory and payer coverage shifts. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Wheel profitable in 2026?
Wheel does not disclose audited financials or profitability figures. It has raised $216M through Series C as of January 19, 2022, and has not confirmed a new priced round since, leaving its financial health unverified by any public filing as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Wheel's business model?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Wheel's core value is its network of licensed, credentialed clinicians who carry clinical liability, a regulatory moat AI cannot assume. Wheel instead positions its Horizon platform, expanded with a Clinical Action Layer in February 2026, as executing AI-generated care rather than competing with it.
Who is Wheel's biggest competitor?
Teladoc Health is the closest incumbent threat, with roughly $2.7B in projected 2025 revenue and about 13% US virtual-care market share as of March 2026. Amazon, already a Wheel partner via Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon Clinic, is the more dangerous potential rival given its capital and existing health assets.
Who owns Wheel Health?
Wheel is privately held and venture-backed, with no single owner. Investors from its January 2022 $150M Series C round include Lightspeed Venture Partners and Tiger Global, alongside CRV, Coatue, Salesforce Ventures, Tusk Ventures, and Silverton Partners, per the company's own funding announcement.
What is Wheel's relationship with Amazon?
Wheel launched a virtual-first medication fulfillment and delivery solution powered by Amazon Pharmacy in June 2025, and Amazon Clinic is listed as a Wheel client. Amazon also owns One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy directly, making it both a partner and a possible future competitor.
Has Wheel raised new funding recently?
No priced funding round has been confirmed since Wheel's $150M Series C closed on January 19, 2022, which brought total funding to $216M and pushed its valuation to $1.01B. As of July 2026, that valuation has not been refreshed by any new disclosed round.
