The call

Woori remains a solidly profitable, fully privatized bank holding company, but it has slipped to fifth place among Korea's big financial groups as NH NongHyup pulls ahead.

Woori Financial Group is one of South Korea's five largest banks, offering checking accounts, loans, investments, and insurance to millions of customers. It is very hard to replace because the government tightly controls who can operate banks, people trust their deposits there, and Woori has decades of data on who pays back loans. But a rival bank called NH NongHyup is now making more profit than Woori and growing faster, especially in investments and securities, which is slowly pushing Woori down the rankings. The one thing that could change this is whether Woori can catch up by growing its investment and insurance businesses fast enough to match NH's strength in those areas over the next few years.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Woori runs about 175 Samsung SDS AI agents internally for lending and compliance, not a threat, a productivity tool. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: NH NongHyup Financial Group. NH passed Woori for 4th place in Q1 2026 and the profit gap widened to 170.1bn won by H1 2026, up from 77.4bn a year earlier. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A banking license, deposit insurance backing, and decades of Korean credit data that no foreign bank or AI startup can replicate.

Questions people ask
What is Woori Financial Group's biggest risk right now?
The biggest risk is not AI or a new entrant but a same-industry rival, NH NongHyup Financial Group, which posted stronger securities and brokerage results and took 4th place from Woori in H1 2026 group profit (KRW 1.78 trillion vs Woori's KRW 1.61 trillion). Our July 2026 assessment found this domestic competitive slide, rather than any external disruption, to be the main pressure point.
Is Woori Financial Group in financial trouble?
Not in a solvency sense: FY2025 consolidated net income was KRW 3.1413 trillion, up 1.8% year over year, and its CET1 ratio stood at 12.9% as of December 2025, above its internal 12.5% target. The softer spot is Woori Bank's standalone core profit, which dropped 14.2% year over year to KRW 2.67 trillion, and group-wide FY2025 revenue, which fell 10.6% year over year to KRW 41.73 trillion.
Who are Woori Financial Group's biggest competitors?
Its main rival is NH NongHyup Financial Group, which overtook Woori for 4th place among Korea's five major financial holding groups in H1 2026 on the strength of its securities and brokerage business. KB Financial Group leads the group on profit and securities strength, Shinhan Financial Group sits close behind KB, and digital-native Kakao Bank is also advancing with AI-driven retail features like automated transfers.
Is Woori Financial Group at risk from AI?
No, AI is not considered a threat to Woori's core business; its licensed banking operations and regulatory position make it hard to disrupt with AI, and our July 2026 assessment found little exposure here. In fact, Samsung SDS already runs more than 175 AI agents inside Woori's back office to support operations, working for the company rather than against it.
What should I watch to see if Woori Financial Group is improving or declining?
Two dated markers matter: whether Woori regains 4th place from NH NongHyup in the group profit ranking by mid-2027, and whether Woori holds its CET1 ratio above its internal 12.5% target through the end of 2026 (it stood at 12.9% as of December 2025). A nearer-term signal is the outcome of Woori Investment & Securities' KRW 1 trillion capital injection, aimed at climbing from 16th to 11th among Korean brokerages, expected to show results by Q4 2026.
How does Woori Financial Group compare to others in its industry cohort?
Among comparable holding companies, Woori stands out for its banking license and regulatory position, which give it strong protection as a privatized holding company. Its main lag is domestic standing: it ranked last among Korea's five major financial groups in H1 2026 profit, trailing NH NongHyup, KB Financial Group, and Shinhan Financial Group.
