The call

Wrtn has real Korean users and fast revenue growth, but no owned model and widening losses while Naver and Kakao circle the same market.

Wrtn Technologies makes AI chatbots for storytelling and character roleplay in South Korea, with 6.5 million monthly users and growing revenue. The company is not hard to copy because it simply wraps OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic's AI models with Korean localization, owns no AI technology of its own, and the founder has publicly said there is no real competitive advantage. Naver (which owns Korea's largest search engine and Webtoon platform) and Kakao (which owns the messaging app most Koreans use daily) can build the same thing themselves and probably already are. The one thing that could change this is if Wrtn's losses stop growing faster than revenue does, or if the Korean government restricts how easily big tech companies can enter the AI companion market, but neither seems likely right now.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Google, Anthropic. Wrtn runs on GPT-5 and other foundation models it doesn't own; those labs could localize for Korea themselves and skip the wrapper. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Naver (Webtoon-IP AI chatbot) and Kakao (KakaoTalk distribution). Naver is reportedly building an AI storytelling chatbot using its own Webtoon library, and Kakao has a bigger built-in Korean user base. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 6.5 million monthly users and over 70% paying-user retention give it real Korean distribution today, even without owning any model.
What would change this call
Naver ships its Webtoon-IP AI storytelling chatbot and reports user acquisition figures. Would show whether Naver's distribution can directly pull users from Wrtn's Crack app.
Korean National Assembly passes or rejects AI-companion/minors regulation within 12-24 months. Would show whether Wrtn's monetization model faces a legal ceiling.
Wrtn's 2026 audited results (due ~April 2027) show operating loss growing faster or slower than revenue. Would show whether the business is moving toward sustainability or burning faster despite growth.

Questions people ask
Is Wrtn Technologies profitable?
No. Wrtn's audited 2025 financials show revenue of about 47.1 billion KRW (~$34M) against an operating loss of about 58.9 billion KRW (~$43M), with the loss growing roughly 1.95x year over year, disclosed April 14, 2026.
Who owns Wrtn Technologies?
Wrtn is privately held and venture-backed. Founded April 2021 by CEO Se-young Lee, it closed a Series B at 108 billion KRW in March 2025 led by Goodwater Capital with BRV Capital Management, and launched a Series C/pre-IPO round in June 2026.
Could AI replace Wrtn Technologies?
Wrtn's own product is a wrapper on OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic models rather than a proprietary foundation model. Its founder has stated there is 'no real moat' in the underlying technology, per Antler's founder-story profile, leaving it exposed to direct frontier-lab competition.
Who is Wrtn Technologies' biggest competitor?
Korea's Naver was reported in July 2026 to be building an AI storytelling chatbot using its Webtoon IP library, a direct threat given Naver's existing distribution. Kakao's messaging dominance and Character.AI's global companion-chat product are also cited as rivals.
Does Wrtn Technologies build its own AI model?
No. As reported April 8, 2025, Wrtn does not build a proprietary foundation model; it builds its 'AI Supporter' and other products on top of OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude.
Will Wrtn Technologies IPO?
The company has floated a possible IPO in Korea or the US as early as 2028, according to a Reuters report published February 10, 2026, while it was also pursuing a Series C/pre-IPO fundraise seeking Korea's Public Growth Fund as an investor as of June 2026.
