The call

Wyzant sits on a large trust dataset and an IXL tie-in while better-funded rivals wrap AI around tutoring and Wyzant itself stays in maintenance mode.

Wyzant connects students with tutors through its website and app, and has built up millions of customer reviews and a vetting system that makes parents trust it. The company is hard to replace right now because of that reputation and its deal with IXL, a big school software company. But two faster-moving rivals, Preply and Nerdy, are adding AI tools to help tutors work better and match students faster, while Wyzant has not shipped any AI features and has not grown its team in years. The one thing that could change this is if Wyzant launches an AI tutor-matching or study-helper tool soon and if IXL keeps investing in Wyzant instead of just letting it run on its own.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nerdy/Varsity Tutors AI-native platform. Nerdy's rebuilt AI-native platform posted its first YoY revenue growth in Q4 2025 while Wyzant has shipped no AI features. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Preply. Preply's fresh $150M Series D and $1.2B valuation fund aggressive US growth against a Wyzant that hasn't raised in over a decade. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 4M+ lesson reviews and vetting data plus IXL's K-12 distribution tie-in give Wyzant trust infrastructure rivals can't quickly copy.
What would change this call
Nerdy (NRDY) reports Q1/Q2 2026 earnings showing continued YoY revenue growth. Confirms AI-native rebuild is converting to real customer/share gains against Wyzant.
Wyzant or IXL announces any AI-branded feature (matching, co-pilot, Emmersion integration) by end of 2026. Would show IXL is investing in Wyzant rather than running it in maintenance mode.
Wyzant headcount trackers (Revelio, Crustdata) show renewed hiring growth in Q2/Q3 2026. Would signal reversal of flat-to-declining staffing and fresh IXL investment.
Key numbers
  • 948 employees Dec 2025, down 10.8% from 2023 (2025-12-01)

Named risks
  • No AI product shipped while Preply and Nerdy roll out AI-native features and co-pilots. Severity: high
  • No outside funding in over 11 years, limiting ability to match rivals' capital investment. Severity: high
  • Flat-to-declining headcount 2023 to 2026 signals maintenance mode under disengaged parent IXL. Severity: medium
  • Commodity tutoring pricing already compressed to $35-$80/hr in test-prep categories exposed to AI substitution. Severity: medium
  • Data quality: no audited financials exist, so external perception could shift sharply if trackers revise estimates. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Wyzant profitable in 2026?
No audited financials are public since Wyzant is a private subsidiary of IXL Learning. Third-party revenue estimates are unreliable and inconsistent, so profitability cannot be confirmed. Known signals: flat-to-declining headcount and no funding raised since 2013, per Crustdata data dated 2026-06-28.
Could AI replace Wyzant's tutors?
AI threatens Wyzant's matching and scheduling layer, and commodity test-prep tutors already sit at $35-$80/hr per a 2026-05-19 review. But Wyzant retains 4M+ vendor-claimed reviews, background-check vetting, and IXL K-12 distribution, which AI tools cannot instantly replicate.
Who owns Wyzant now?
Wyzant has been owned by IXL Learning since the acquisition was announced February 4, 2021 and finalized in Q1 2021. IXL also owns Rosetta Stone, Vocabulary.com, ABCya, Education.com and TPT; deal terms were not disclosed.
Is Wyzant losing ground to Preply?
Preply closed a $150M Series D in January 2026 reaching a $1.2B valuation and 100,000+ tutors across 180 countries, dwarfing Wyzant's lone $21.5M 2013 raise. Wyzant has shipped no equivalent AI co-pilot, suggesting it is losing competitive momentum as of mid-2026.
Has Wyzant shipped any AI features?
No Wyzant-branded AI-copilot or AI-native platform rebuild has been found in public sources as of 2026-06-28. Its most recent product news is 'Instant Book,' a scheduling feature launched November 21, 2024, not an AI capability.
Is Wyzant a safe company to work for right now?
Wyzant shows flat-to-declining headcount trends across trackers from 2023 to 2026 (Revelio Labs cites 948 employees in December 2025, down from 1,063 in 2023) and no new funding in over 11 years, consistent with a maintenance-mode subsidiary rather than a scaling business.
