The call

xAI ships real products and controls rare data and hardware paths, but sits a distant fourth in revenue while OpenAI and Anthropic pull further ahead.

xAI, now part of SpaceX, builds AI software that competes with ChatGPT and Claude. It has real advantages: access to X's live data stream, ties to Tesla and Starlink customers, and Pentagon connections. But it is losing today: it loses $6 billion a year, has only 2% of ChatGPT's users, and makes a quarter of what OpenAI makes. The main rivals, OpenAI and Anthropic, are bigger, more profitable, and have more customers. The one thing that could change everything is if xAI's next AI model (Grok 5) becomes clearly the best on every test and companies actually switch to using it instead of ChatGPT or Claude, turning those built-in advantages into real business wins.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI's ChatGPT (GPT-5.x). ChatGPT holds roughly 50x Grok's usage and pulls enterprise dollars xAI needs to close its $6.36B loss. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google DeepMind (Gemini). Gemini rides Android, Search, and Workspace to over 650M users, a distribution edge xAI cannot match without X alone. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Real time access to X's data firehose, plus Tesla, Starlink, and Pentagon ties give Grok data and deployment paths rivals lack.
What would change this call
OpenAI files IPO paperwork (targeted Sept 2026) disclosing ARR vs xAI's $3.2B revenue. Shows the real financial gap between xAI and the market leader.
Anthropic exercises its 90-day exit clause on the $1.25B/month compute deal with xAI. Would signal Anthropic no longer values xAI's compute as a partner.
Grok 5 launch results measured in enterprise adoption and paid seats, not just benchmark scores. Would show whether xAI is closing the adoption gap or falling further behind.

Questions people ask
Is xAI still an independent company in 2026?
No. SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal on February 2, 2026, valuing xAI at $250 billion, and by July 2026 the combined entity was formally rebranded SpaceXAI, folding Grok and X into SpaceX's AI division.
Is xAI profitable?
No. SpaceX's May 20, 2026 S-1 disclosed the AI segment (xAI) posted $3.2 billion in 2025 revenue against a $6.36 billion operating loss, with Q1 2026 alone showing $818 million revenue and a $2.47 billion loss.
How does Grok's usage compare to ChatGPT?
Grok reached about 117 million monthly active users for AI features as of March 2026, versus OpenAI's ChatGPT scale, implying Grok reaches roughly 2 percent of ChatGPT's usage per the same SpaceX S-1 disclosure.
Who is xAI's biggest competitor?
OpenAI and Anthropic. OpenAI's ARR tripled past $20 billion in 2025 (OpenAI, July 17, 2026) and Anthropic projected about $10.9 billion in Q2 2026 revenue while being near-profitable, both far ahead of xAI's $3.2 billion 2025 revenue.
Could AI replace xAI's own workforce?
Partially already happening: xAI cut 500 data-annotation workers in September 2025 as training pipelines automated, even as the company grew overall headcount to about 4,585 employees by December 2025 per Revelio Labs.
Who owns xAI now?
xAI is a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) since the February 2, 2026 all-stock acquisition; SpaceX itself completed the largest IPO in history on June 12, 2026, raising $75 billion at a $1.77 trillion opening valuation.
