The call

Xiaohongshu is profitable and growing fast, but its IPO path and its search-driven discovery habit both face open questions heading into 2026.

Xiaohongshu is a social platform where real people post honest reviews of products they bought, and other shoppers search there to decide what to buy. The hard part to copy is that the reviews are genuine and trustworthy, unlike ads or fake posts elsewhere. But two big threats could break this: first, AI assistants like Doubao can answer product questions directly without users ever opening the app, stealing those searches; second, fake AI-written reviews could flood the site faster than the company can clean them out. The one thing that matters most is whether the company can keep people actually searching on its app instead of turning to AI first, and whether a legal complaint about its corporate structure gets resolved without blocking its plans to go public.

Why
01
AI pressure: Doubao and other domestic AI assistants. If people ask an AI assistant for product picks instead of searching Xiaohongshu, the discovery habit that drives its ad and commerce revenue erodes. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: ByteDance/Douyin. Douyin, with 750M+ DAU, is building its own grass-planting review features aimed at the same product-discovery use case. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A large pool of authentic user reviews and a search habit users already trust, hard to fake or replicate quickly.
What would change this call
Douyin ships a grass-planting/review discovery product and reports usage or ad-share gains. Shows ByteDance is directly copying Xiaohongshu's discovery model to pull ad dollars away.
Xiaohongshu daily search-query growth flatlines or declines through Q4 2026. Would show Doubao-style AI assistants are intercepting product-discovery queries before the app.
Hong Kong IPO timeline slips or the July 2026 VIE-structure complaint escalates. Signals equity-holder risk and possible down-round pricing on the path to liquidity.

Questions people ask
Is Xiaohongshu profitable in 2026?
Yes. Xiaohongshu turned profitable around 2023 with roughly $500M net profit on $3.7B revenue, and by September 2025 the company was projecting 2025 profit to roughly triple to about $3B on around $4.8B 2024 revenue, per Sacra.
Is Xiaohongshu going public?
Xiaohongshu tapped Goldman Sachs and CICC in June 2026 for a Hong Kong IPO targeting listing by end of 2026 at roughly $70B valuation, but a July 28, 2026 complaint to the Hong Kong exchange over its VIE structure now clouds the timeline.
Who owns Xiaohongshu?
Xiaohongshu is privately held, backed by Tencent and Alibaba (each part of a $300M joint investment at a $3B valuation in June 2018), plus HongShan, DST Global, Hillhouse, Boyu Capital, CITIC Capital, GSR Ventures, and Temasek.
Could AI replace Xiaohongshu?
AI assistants like Doubao and DeepSeek threaten to intercept the product-recommendation searches that are Xiaohongshu's core use case; the company responded by launching its own Diandian AI search assistant in December 2024 and open-sourcing the dots.llm1 model in June 2025.
Who is Xiaohongshu's biggest competitor?
Douyin (ByteDance's Chinese TikTok), reported at over 750M daily active users, is the largest adjacent threat, though its watch-time-optimized model differs from Xiaohongshu's search-driven discovery habit used by roughly 350 million monthly active users as of mid-2026.
Is Xiaohongshu banned anywhere?
Taiwan ordered ISPs to block Xiaohongshu for one year starting December 2025 citing over 1,700 fraud cases, and the app was removed from Google Play and the Apple App Store in India in March 2026 over disinformation allegations.
