The call

XiaoZhu is growing fast on Alibaba's rails but hasn't raised money or shown independent traction in eight years.

XiaoZhu is a 13-year-old Chinese website where people rent out their homes to travelers, similar to Airbnb. Most of its recent growth comes from being featured on Alibaba's shopping platforms rather than customers finding it on their own, which is a weakness. Alibaba is both helping XiaoZhu grow and could easily compete against it by building its own homestay service, so the real question is whether Alibaba will keep boosting XiaoZhu, buy it outright, or just build a competing option inside its own apps.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI travel agent or booking bot yet named as displacing XiaoZhu's listings or hosts. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Alibaba (Fliggy/Taobao). Alibaba's Taobao/Fliggy traffic now drives XiaoZhu's growth, but the same pipe could turn XiaoZhu into a replaceable supply vendor. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 13 years of host/guest trust, licensing across 400+ cities, and a live Alibaba checkout integration rivals would need to rebuild.
What would change this call
XiaoZhu announces a new priced funding round or IPO filing. Would show the company is still attracting fresh capital, not stalled since 2018.
Fliggy launches its own C2C homestay listings product. Would show Alibaba turning from partner to direct competitor.
XiaoZhu discloses standalone app/own-brand booking volume separate from Taobao traffic. Would show growth is organic, not just Alibaba-channel dependent.

  • Alibaba, its main distribution partner, faces escalating US regulatory pressure including a June 2026 military-company designation. Severity: medium
  • Unresolved leadership identity discrepancy between Chen Chi and CB Insights-listed founder Liantao Wang. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is XiaoZhu profitable?
No audited or company-disclosed profit figures exist. Aggregator sites cite unconfirmed numbers like $43M net income, but these are unverified templated estimates. XiaoZhu has not disclosed financials since its last funding round in October 2018.
Who owns XiaoZhu, and is it part of Alibaba?
XiaoZhu is privately held, not owned by Alibaba. Its largest backer is Jack Ma's Yunfeng Capital, which led a $120M round in November 2017 and a ~$300M round in October 2018. Alibaba is a distribution partner via Taobao and Fliggy, not an owner.
Is XiaoZhu still worth $1.5 billion?
No priced funding round or valuation update has been reported since October 2018, when XiaoZhu reaffirmed unicorn status after raising ~$300M. The current $1.5B tag is a legacy figure; eight years without a new round through July 2026 makes it unverified.
Who is XiaoZhu's biggest competitor?
Tujia, a Beijing-based, professionally-managed short-term rental platform backed by Ctrip (Trip.com Group), is XiaoZhu's most direct domestic rival as of October 2025, competing for the same C2C and managed-property homestay demand.
Could AI replace XiaoZhu?
Unlikely to be fully replaced. XiaoZhu is a physical two-sided marketplace built on 13+ years of host relationships and China's address-registration compliance regime, which AI cannot substitute. Customer service and pricing workflows are automatable, but the core marketplace is not, as of 2025.
Is XiaoZhu growing right now?
Yes, per company-reported figures relayed by trade media: during the October 2025 National Day holiday, XiaoZhu's GMV grew 55.3% year-over-year and room-nights booked via Taobao grew 198% YoY, driven by new integration with Alibaba's Fliggy and Taobao.
