The call

A licensed, decades-old firm facing a name dispute with its own founder and a fractured network, while rivals collect the awards and AI tools reshape billable work around it.

Zaid Ibrahim & Co is a 40-year-old law firm in Malaysia that handles legal work for businesses and individuals. It has protection that most rivals do not: the Malaysian Bar Council requires all law firms to be licensed and limits foreign competitors, and AI tools cannot replace lawyers in court or replace that license. However, the firm is in real trouble right now: its founder is suing to get the firm's name back and demanding money from a 2008 buyout (a court ruled in May 2026 to allow evidence gathering), key partnerships fell apart in early 2025, and new leadership just took over in July 2025. Meanwhile, rivals like Christopher & Lee Ong are winning more business and awards. The lawsuit outcome over the next few years will determine whether the firm stays strong or weakens further.

Why
01
AI pressure: LexisNexis Lexis+ AI with Protégé. Launched in Malaysia Oct 2025 for research and drafting, projected to cut chargeable hours industry-wide but can't touch court rights of audience. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Christopher & Lee Ong (Rajah & Tann Asia network). Swept Malaysia Law Firm of the Year across 17 categories in 2025 while ZIC dealt with network exit and leadership change. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Bar Council licensure and rights of audience block both foreign firms and AI models from replacing licensed Malaysian practice.
What would change this call
High Court ruling on ZIC's stay application (sought July 2026) over the discovery order. Shows whether the founder's name litigation risk escalates toward forced rebrand.
Any additional ZICO Law member firm exits or re-affiliations after the Cambodia/Indonesia departures. Would confirm further network fragmentation weakening ZIC's regional brand.
Partner departures from Zaid Ibrahim & Co in the 12 months following the July 2025 managing partner transition. Would indicate internal instability or loss of confidence post-leadership change.

Questions people ask
Is Zaid Ibrahim & Co profitable?
The law firm itself discloses no standalone financials as a private partnership. Its affiliated public entity, ZICO Holdings Inc, reported a S$0.9 million net profit for FY2025 versus a S$5.6 million loss in FY2024, but that reflects Holdings group operations, not the Malaysian legal practice.
Could AI replace lawyers at Zaid Ibrahim & Co?
Unlikely to replace them outright. Malaysian Bar Council licensure and court rights of audience are legally required and AI cannot substitute for them. However, PwC's 2025 survey projects AI could cut chargeable hours by about 16% at top-100 firms globally, pressuring margins rather than eliminating the profession.
Who owns Zaid Ibrahim & Co?
It is a private Malaysian partnership, not owned by any public company since Malaysian law bars public ownership of law firms. Founder Zaid Ibrahim relinquished his 57% stake in 2008 for RM25.65 million; current leadership is Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani as of July 2025.
Is Zaid Ibrahim & Co's biggest competitor Christopher & Lee Ong?
Christopher & Lee Ong, part of the Rajah & Tann Asia network, was named 2025 Malaysia Law Firm of the Year winning across 17 categories, per Asia Business Law Journal awards dated 2026-05-11, putting it ahead of Zaid Ibrahim & Co in recent rankings.
Did Zaid Ibrahim & Co leave the KPMG network?
Yes. After joining KPMG Law's global network in December 2022, Zaid Ibrahim & Co exited in April 2025 along with the Cambodia and Indonesia ZICO Law member firms, reverting to independent operation, per a law.asia report dated 2025-06-24.
Why is Zaid Ibrahim being sued by its own founder?
Founder Zaid Ibrahim filed suit against the firm demanding it stop using his name and hand over branded materials, tied to a 2008 buyout where he relinquished 57% equity for RM25.65 million. A Malaysian High Court granted him document discovery in May 2026; the firm sought a stay by late July 2026.
