The call

Zalando still runs the pipes European fashion e-commerce depends on, but shoppers and their wallets are drifting toward Shein and, eventually, AI agents that skip the storefront entirely.

Zalando is a large European online fashion store that also sells logistics and software tools to other fashion retailers. It is getting harder to protect because Shein and Temu already grabbed market share with rock-bottom prices in Germany, and new AI shopping assistants could turn Zalando from a destination customers visit into just a warehouse in the background. The company is betting it can make money from selling software and services to other fashion businesses and from absorbing ABOUT YOU, but Q1 2026 showed losses despite accounting profits, so whether this turnaround works in 2026 and 2027 will decide if the stock recovers or keeps sliding.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic shopping assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Amazon Rufus-style agents). If agents buy for shoppers, Zalando risks becoming a backend fulfillment supplier and losing its ad revenue. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Shein and Temu. Shein now holds 41.4% of German fashion wallet share versus Zalando's 37.0%, as of mid 2026. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its logistics network, Plus membership base of 18.5 million, and B2B tech units like SCAYLE and ZEOS that other retailers depend on.

Questions people ask
Is Zalando profitable in 2026?
Mixed. Zalando posted a Q1 2026 net loss of €87.6 million despite positive adjusted EBIT of €64.8 million, on revenue of €2.996 billion (2026-03-31). FY2026 guidance targets adjusted EBIT of €660-740 million, reaffirmed 2026-07-21 after a BaFin disclosure probe.
Is Zalando losing market share to Shein?
Yes, in its home market. Third-party German panel data shows Shein overtook Zalando in online-fashion wallet share by H1 2026, at 41.4% versus Zalando's 37.0%, down from 42.8% Shein share in H2 2025 (as of 2026-06-30).
Who owns Zalando?
Zalando SE is publicly traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker ZAL) with no single controlling owner. Kinnevik AB was the largest known institutional shareholder at roughly 20% as of mid-2024. Market cap was about €7.29 billion as of 2026-07-23.
Could AI agents replace Zalando as a shopping destination?
Zalando is exposed but adapting: it built its Zalando Assistant on OpenAI's GPT-4o mini across 25+ markets and endorsed Google's Universal Commerce Protocol for agentic checkout as of March 2026, betting on becoming a backend AI-commerce supplier rather than losing the storefront entirely.
Did Zalando complete the ABOUT YOU acquisition?
Yes. Zalando closed the ABOUT YOU takeover on 2025-07-11 after EU clearance, acquiring about 91.45% of shares, then completed a squeeze-out and delisting on 2025-11-06, making ABOUT YOU a wholly-owned subsidiary targeting €100 million annual synergies by 2028.
Is Zalando facing regulatory trouble?
Germany's BaFin censured Zalando on 2026-07-21 for omitting disclosure of a €252 million related-party ABOUT YOU share purchase involving a supervisory board member's entity. The regulator called it a formal disclosure lapse, with no fine and no restatement of reported KPIs.
