The call

Zenius stopped operating in January 2024 and nothing since then, including any AI angle, changes that fact.

Zenius sold pre-recorded lesson videos and practice questions to students preparing for high school and college entrance exams in Indonesia. It is now extremely easy to replace because Ruangguru, a competitor with more money, already serves the same students at similar quality, and because free AI tools like ChatGPT can answer student questions instantly and cheaply, making Zenius's old-style video library less necessary. The only thing that could revive the picture would be if a buyer acquires Zenius's brand and student data and rebuilds it as part of an official school or certification system rather than just relaunching the same app.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Gemini, and localized AI tutoring tools. AI tutors now do cheaply what Zenius charged for, but the company has no operations left for AI to eat. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Ruangguru (PT Ruang Raya Indonesia). Ruangguru raised $205M+ and kept serving Indonesian students while Zenius shut down in January 2024. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent: no operating business, product, or team remains to protect.
What would change this call
Any acquirer announces it has bought Zenius's brand, IP, or user data. Would show whether Zenius's assets survive under new ownership or are simply gone.
A public statement from co-founder Sabda Putra Subekti or ex-CEO Rohan Monga about a new venture. Would show whether Zenius's leadership is rebuilding or has fully moved on.
Ruangguru or another firm announces a B2G or school-channel edtech partnership in Indonesia. Would show the incumbent capturing the regulated channel Zenius never secured.

Questions people ask
Is Zenius still operating in 2026?
No. Zenius announced a suspension of operations on January 3-4, 2024 after 20 years, and as of mid-2026 there is no confirmed funded relaunch, new leadership statement, or product launch, despite the zenius.net domain still technically resolving.
Did Zenius go bankrupt?
Zenius called it a 'temporary suspension' announced January 3-4, 2024, after months of bankruptcy rumors. A December 2023 M&A rescue attempt with several Indonesian edtech firms collapsed when an undisclosed investor missed a deadline, per a 2026-01-02 retrospective.
Who owns Zenius now?
Zenius Education was privately venture-backed by MDI Ventures, Northstar Group, Alpha JWC Ventures, Openspace Ventures, Beacon Venture Capital, Beenext, Kinesys Group and Kvision, per Jakarta Globe, January 4, 2024. No new owner or acquirer has been publicly confirmed since the January 2024 shutdown.
Was Zenius profitable?
Founder Sabda PS said in a December 18, 2019 interview that Zenius was 'long profitable' with 11+ million annual users before VC scaling. By 2023, per a 2026-01-02 retrospective, roughly 30% of revenue was going to debt service and infrastructure costs, contributing to the shutdown.
Could AI replace Zenius's products?
Zenius's core offering, pre-recorded video lessons, static question banks, and a pre-LLM chatbot called ZenBot, is exactly the content-delivery layer generalist AI tutors like ChatGPT now replicate at near-zero marginal cost, and the company itself is defunct since January 2024.
Who is Zenius's biggest competitor?
Ruangguru (PT Ruang Raya Indonesia) was the dominant rival, having raised over $205 million including a $150M Series C in 2019 and $55M in 2021, versus Zenius's roughly $40 million total funding disclosed January 4, 2024.
