The call

Zenlayer has real physical infrastructure that took years to build, but a stale funding history leaves it under-armed against hyperscalers pouring capital into the same emerging markets.

Zenlayer builds data centers and networking equipment at the edge of the internet, spread across 50 countries especially in developing regions, to help businesses run their software faster locally. It is hard to copy because building and maintaining physical servers worldwide takes years and money, but the big cloud companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are now building their own edge networks in those same markets, which could slowly take Zenlayer's customers. The company also launched AI software products, but these are easier for rivals like Cloudflare to recreate. The one thing that could change everything is if Zenlayer raises fresh money soon to build more servers faster, because without new funding it will lose a costly race against much richer competitors.

Why
01
AI pressure: Cloudflare, CoreWeave, and frontier labs' native multi-model routing. AI Gateway and Inference products sit exposed as thin orchestration layers that bigger platforms can copy or bundle for free. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud via Local Zones and Distributed Cloud expansion. Hyperscalers are pushing edge compute into the same emerging markets Zenlayer built its footprint on, with far more capital. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Physical edge nodes across 50 countries, including emerging markets hyperscalers have deprioritized, take years to replicate.
What would change this call
Zenlayer announces a Series D or new strategic funding round by end of 2026. Would show capex capacity to compete on infrastructure buildout.
AWS Local Zones or Google Distributed Cloud expand into South/Southeast Asia or Africa in 2026. Would show hyperscalers directly contesting Zenlayer's emerging-market edge footprint.
Cloudflare or a frontier lab launches native multi-model routing/edge inference by end of 2026. Would show Zenlayer's AI Gateway/Inference layer being commoditized.
Key numbers
  • $102M total disclosed funding, last raised Dec 2021 (2021-12)
  • ~300 edge nodes across 50 countries (2026-06)
  • No new funding round in over 4 years as of mid-2026 (2026-06)
Named risks
  • No new funding round since December 2021 while capex-intensive rivals like CoreWeave raise and deploy heavily. Severity: high
  • AI Gateway and Distributed Inference are thin orchestration layers replicable by hyperscalers or frontier labs. Severity: medium
  • Public revenue estimates are wildly inconsistent across sources, undermining verifiable financial credibility. Severity: medium
  • Dependence on Equinix and Digital Realty partnerships means colocation cost increases could compress margins. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Zenlayer profitable in 2026?
No audited figures exist. Third-party revenue estimates conflict wildly, from Growjo's ~$35.7M (2022) to unverified 2025 claims near $400M from SEO content sites. Zenlayer has not confirmed any revenue figure, and its last funding round closed December 2021 at $12M, raising questions about capital runway.
Who owns Zenlayer?
Zenlayer is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2014 by Joe Zhu, with no parent company. Total disclosed funding is $102M across four rounds since 2017, led by investors including F&G Venture, Forebright Capital, and Prospect Avenue Capital, with the last round closing December 2021.
Could AI replace Zenlayer's business?
Zenlayer's physical edge nodes and peering relationships across roughly 50 countries are hard for pure software to replicate, but its October 2025 AI Gateway, a multi-model routing layer, is a thin orchestration product that hyperscalers and frontier labs could build natively, exposing that specific offering to commoditization.
Is CoreWeave a bigger competitor to Zenlayer than hyperscalers?
CoreWeave, which completed its IPO in March 2025 with customers like OpenAI, Jane Street, and Mistral AI, operates at far larger AI-compute scale than Zenlayer. Combined with AWS, Azure, and GCP edge expansion, Zenlayer faces pressure from both well-capitalized neoclouds and hyperscalers simultaneously.
Has Zenlayer raised new funding recently?
No. Zenlayer's most recent disclosed raise was a $12M Series C-II round in December 2021, part of $102M in total funding since 2017. As of July 2026, no valuation or new round has been publicly reported, making the funding record over four years stale.
What AI products has Zenlayer launched?
Zenlayer launched Distributed Inference on October 9, 2025, an instant-deployment global AI inference platform, followed by AI Gateway on October 28, 2025, a unified API with token-based pricing for accessing multiple LLMs. Both target latency-sensitive, multi-region AI deployment.
