The call

Zhihu cut costs into its first profit while its core Q&A traffic keeps shrinking, leaving paid fiction as the only part of the business still growing.

Zhihu lets people ask questions and get answers from other users, similar to how Quora works in English. The problem is that AI chatbots like DeepSeek and Kimi now answer questions instantly without needing a community, and bigger rivals like Baidu have their own search and AI tools. Zhihu's revenue has dropped over 20% for several quarters in a row. The company only became profitable recently by cutting costs and buying back stock, not by growing. The one thing that could matter is if Zhihu can make real money by licensing its user-generated content to AI companies, but so far that has not happened at a meaningful scale.

Why
01
AI pressure: DeepSeek, Kimi (Moonshot), Zhipu AI, MiniMax, and Baidu's Ernie Bot. Chatbots now answer the questions people used to search Zhihu for, cutting off the traffic that fed its ad and content business. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Baidu (Baidu Zhidao, Ernie Bot) and ByteDance/Douyin. Baidu's own Q&A product and AI assistant, plus ByteDance's content apps, pull users and ad dollars away from Zhihu with no entry barrier stopping them. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large archive of user-generated Chinese answers and a paid fiction arm (Yan Yan Stories) growing fast, but neither is licensed or monetized as AI training data yet.

Paid-fiction segment (Yan Yan Stories) revenue growth rate in upcoming quarterly filings. shows whether Zhihu's only growing business can offset continued core Q&A decline.
