The call

Zilch is profitable and growing fast in a category Klarna, Monzo, and Revolut all fight over with the same tools and no locked door.

Zilch lets customers split purchases into payments over time, and it makes money doing this in the UK with 5.5 million users. The problem is that bigger companies like Klarna (20 times larger), Monzo, Revolut, and PayPal are doing the exact same thing, and nothing stops them from taking Zilch's customers except that Zilch got licensed by regulators first and knows more about what its users spend money on. If Klarna keeps growing after its stock got cut in half, or if new rules in July 2026 make lending harder for everyone, Zilch could face real trouble.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents and Visa's agentic commerce layer. AI agents cannot issue regulated credit, so Zilch is a launch partner for Visa's agentic checkout, not a target of it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Klarna. Klarna has 119m global customers, 20x Zilch's scale, and runs the same ad-subsidised BNPL model in the UK. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FCA dual licence, Visa principal membership, and first-party spend data give a regulatory head start, not protection from larger licensed rivals.
What would change this call
Klarna announces a UK-specific market share push or pricing change post-IPO in 2026. Would show the largest rival using its scale to squeeze Zilch's UK position.
Zilch's Fjord Bank acquisition closes and European rollout launches on schedule. Would show Zilch executing expansion rather than staying UK-boxed against bigger rivals.
FCA's 15 July 2026 BNPL affordability rules take effect and Zilch's customer growth rate after. Would show whether regulation entrenches Zilch's licensed edge or slows it more than rivals.

Questions people ask
Is Zilch profitable in 2026?
Zilch reported its first monthly profit in July 2024 and its first quarterly profit in October 2024. For the fiscal year ended 31 March 2025 it cut net losses 79% to £10.5m on revenue of £110.3m, up 93% year on year, per its own financial disclosures.
How does Zilch compare to Klarna?
Zilch is roughly 20 times smaller than Klarna. Zilch had 5.5m registered customers as of January 2026, while Klarna reports over 119m active global consumers and is NYSE-listed since September 2025, though Klarna's stock has fallen over 50% since its IPO by July 2026.
Could AI replace Zilch's business model?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Zilch's regulated credit issuance, FCA payments licence secured December 2025, and Visa principal membership create a compliance barrier AI cannot replicate. Zilch also joined Visa's Agentic Ready programme via Thredd in July 2026, routing AI-agent payments through its own rails.
Who owns Zilch?
Zilch is privately held, founded in 2018 by Philip Belamant, Sean O'Connor and Serge Belamant. Investors include Goldman Sachs Asset Management, DMG Ventures, KKCG, and BNF Capital, with KKCG leading a $175m debt and equity round in November 2025.
Will Zilch go public soon?
Zilch has signaled a possible London or New York listing as early as end-2026 or into 2027, per reporting from City AM and Financial News in early to mid 2026, though no confirmed date has been set as of July 2026.
What is Zilch's biggest competitive threat?
Klarna is the main threat: it is about 20 times Zilch's scale with over 119m active consumers globally and is already NYSE-listed since September 2025, running the same ad-subsidised BNPL model with far larger existing distribution.
