Zoox
Amazon-owned robotaxi company building purpose-built self-driving vehicles for paid rides.
Zoox has Amazon's money and a real fleet on the road, but it is still giving rides away free while Waymo already charges fares at far greater scale.
Zoox builds self-driving taxi cars and wants to offer paid rides to customers, but it has not earned any money so far. Waymo, which is owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, is way ahead: it already has paying customers in ten cities, has driven over 100 million miles on its own, and has way more cars on the road. Right now, Zoox survives only because Amazon keeps paying for it, even though nobody knows if the numbers will ever work out. The big question that could change everything is whether Zoox actually launches paying rides through Uber in Las Vegas in summer 2026 and gets the government's permission to charge fares by the end of 2026; if that happens, it has a real shot, but if those two things do not happen while Waymo keeps growing, Zoox's chances get much worse.
Zoox launches paid rides via Uber in Las Vegas by summer 2026 as planned. Shows whether Zoox can convert its Amazon-funded tech into real commercial volume.
Waymo expands paid service into Las Vegas or LA before Zoox achieves paid fares there. Shows Waymo capturing the same markets Zoox is targeting, ahead of it.
- Fleet grew from 50 to 105 vehicles
- Nearly 2M autonomous miles, 350K+ riders
- No independent funding raise in over 80 months
- Fare-charging exemption and CPUC permit remain pending, blocking all revenue as of July 2026.
- Four software recalls in 16 months including a July 2026 smoke-blindness incident requiring human teleoperator rescue.
- Total dependence on Amazon capital with no independent funding since the 2020 acquisition.
- Waymo's multi-year lead in cities, fleet size, and mileage puts sustained competitive pressure on Zoox's slower rollout.
- Employee sentiment reported negative and declining through 2025 during a critical commercialization phase.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Waymo | losing to | Waymo has ~10 paid-service cities and 100M+ miles vs Zoox's 105 vehicles and no fares as of Jul 2026 |
| Tesla | contesting | Tesla runs Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin amid same June 2026 brake-pedal rule proposal affecting Zoox |
| Uber (via Nuro/Lucid) | contesting | Uber partners with Zoox for Las Vegas/LA (Mar 2026) while separately backing Nuro and Lucid for Houston robotaxis |
- Is Zoox profitable in 2026?
- No. As of November 2025 Zoox rides remain free to the public because the company lacks regulatory approval to charge fares, and it has no disclosed standalone revenue since Amazon does not break out its financials, leaving it pre-revenue as of mid-2026.
- Who owns Zoox?
- Amazon.com, Inc. Amazon signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire Zoox on June 26, 2020, and Zoox now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary with CEO Aicha Evans reporting to Amazon SVP Panos Panay as of August 2025.
- Who is Zoox's biggest competitor?
- Waymo, owned by Alphabet. As of September 2025 Waymo operates paid service in roughly 10 US cities with over 100 million autonomous miles logged, while Zoox had only about 105 vehicles in service and no fare-charging approval as of July 2026.
- Can Zoox legally charge fares yet?
- Not as of July 2026. Zoox's commercial FMVSS exemption request needed to charge fares is pending under NHTSA docket 2025-0523, filed March 2026, and it also still needs a California Public Utilities Commission permit to charge fares in California.
- Has Zoox had any safety recalls?
- Yes, four software recalls in 16 months: March 2025 (258 vehicles for hard-braking issues), May 2025 (two separate collision incidents), December 2025 (332 vehicles for unnecessary lane crossing), and July 2026 (105 vehicles after one drove blind into smoke at a Las Vegas fire scene).
- What is Zoox's deal with Uber?
- On March 11, 2026, Uber and Zoox announced a strategic multi-year partnership to list Zoox robotaxis on the Uber app, launching in Las Vegas in summer 2026 and expanding to Los Angeles in 2027, marking Zoox's first third-party platform integration.
