The call

China's Double Reduction rules gutted its domestic business, and its overseas AI pivot faces the same open competition, including a better-funded ByteDance rival, with no protective feature left.

Zuoyebang was a Chinese homework helper that let students photograph questions and get answers from a giant database. The company's advantage came from its image recognition technology and huge collection of past questions and answers. But that edge disappeared when ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and other AI systems became free and could do the same thing instantly. At the same time, China banned for-profit tutoring apps in 2021, which destroyed Zuoyebang's main business and cut its staff from 35,000 people to just a few thousand. The company moved overseas and launched Question.AI, which reached the top 10 US download rankings by mid-2024. However, ByteDance (the company behind TikTok) launched a competing app called Gauth that is better funded and getting ahead in the same market. The question that matters most: whether the US government will restrict Chinese AI apps over the next couple of years, which could block Question.AI from reaching American users.

Why
01
AI pressure: ByteDance's Gauth, plus GPT-4o, Gemini, and Qwen doing photo homework-solving free. Photo-search homework OCR, once Zuoyebang's core trick, is now a free feature in every major multimodal model. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: ByteDance. ByteDance's Gauth competes directly in the same overseas homework-help niche, with more funding and distribution reach. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent: no hardware lock-in, no exclusive content, no regulatory protection, just an early download lead.
What would change this call
Question.AI/Poly.AI US app-store ranking versus ByteDance's Gauth over the next 2-3 quarters. Shows whether Zuoyebang's overseas pivot is gaining or losing ground to a better-funded rival.
US Treasury/USTR scrutiny of Chinese AI apps around July 2026 turning into actual sanctions. Would show whether Question.AI/Poly.AI's US distribution is at legal risk.
Any new funding round or IPO filing announced by Zuoyebang since December 2020. Would show whether investors still back the company after its post-2020 collapse.

Questions people ask
Is Zuoyebang still in business after China's tutoring crackdown?
Yes, but transformed. Zuoyebang shelved its US IPO on May 26, 2021 after Double Reduction rules banned for profit K-9 tutoring. It pivoted overseas with Question.AI, launched May 2023, which ranked 3rd among top US AI app downloads in H1 2024 per Sensor Tower data.
Who owns Zuoyebang and has it raised money recently?
Zuoyebang is private, backed by Alibaba, Tiger Global, SoftBank Vision Fund, Sequoia China and others from a December 2020 round exceeding 1.6 billion dollars. No verified funding round has closed since then, as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Zuoyebang's core product?
Largely already has. Zuoyebang's original moat, photo search homework OCR plus a question bank, is now a native feature in frontier multimodal models like GPT-4o and Gemini, eliminating the differentiation that once separated it from any general AI assistant.
Is Zuoyebang profitable in 2026?
No audited figures are public since it is private. Third party revenue estimates conflict wildly, from about 65.6 million dollars to 380 million dollars for 2024, indicating no verified profitability data exists as of 2026.
Who is Zuoyebang's biggest competitor?
ByteDance's Gauth, a Singapore based AI homework app that reportedly reached over 2 million peak daily active users in 2024, ahead of Zuoyebang's Question.AI, which ranked 3rd in US AI app downloads in H1 2024.
Did Zuoyebang ever try to go public?
Yes. It was reportedly valued near 10 billion dollars ahead of a planned US IPO in December 2020, but shelved the listing indefinitely on May 26, 2021 after Beijing's Double Reduction rules banned for profit academic tutoring.
