Durability Ranking: Hong Kong Companies Assessed July 2026

How 83 Hong Kong companies fared in a July 2026 durability review: property giants and MTR at the top, retail, crypto and middlemen under the most pressure.

Hong Kong's corporate landscape splits cleanly into two groups: businesses that own something physical or licensed that cannot be duplicated, and businesses that compete on being the cheapest or fastest intermediary. Our July 2026 assessment of 83 Hong Kong companies, part of a 10,525-company global dataset, shows the gap between those two groups in hard numbers.

A note on method before the numbers. Every company was checked against public filings, news reports, and market data before being placed into a standing category. We never declare an outcome for any company; forward-looking material is published only as dated watch-items readers can verify themselves.

The headline numbers

Of the 83 Hong Kong companies assessed in July 2026, 20 earned the top standing of Hard to displace, while 29 landed losing its protection and 13 were rated Little protection left, the weakest label. A further 13 were rated defensible for now, and 9 were protection under test. Across the 83 companies, 18 were flagged as facing significant competitive pressure.

That distribution is a two-story city. Roughly a quarter of the list is barely touched by anything new. The rest is being squeezed, and mostly not by AI directly. Mainland and global scale players are the real threat in this market.

Who sits at the top

The Hard to displace group in Hong Kong is dominated by land, licenses, and networks. MTR Corporation, Sun Hung Kai Properties, Henderson Land, CK Asset Holdings, and the University of Hong Kong were assessed as facing the least competitive pressure of any Hong Kong companies covered in July 2026. HKT Limited was assessed the same way, reflecting its dominant fixed-line and mobile network with no visible customer loss.

The reasons are structural, not cyclical. MTR runs the subway under a government-owned monopoly; no rival can build a competing network. Sun Hung Kai is the city's largest developer, with a land bank and rental income base too big for any single rival to dent. Techtronic Industries owns Milwaukee and Ryobi, power tool brands with loyal trade buyers and no reported share loss. AIA Group, Swire Properties, Hang Lung Properties, Wharf Holdings, Wheelock, Mandarin Oriental, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, SUNeVision, Octopus Holdings, and the insurtech Bowtie round out the Hard to displace cohort.

One surprise on the list: Bowtie, a digital insurer, sits in the Hard to displace group, while the licensed virtual banks around it (Mox, livi, ZA Bank, Ping An OneConnect Bank) all landed losing its protection.

Who is under pressure, and from whom

The pressure map from the July 2026 assessment names specific rivals, and most of them are not AI.

Jewellery. Chow Sang Sang is not losing to technology; it is losing to Chow Tai Fook, which is growing faster in Hong Kong and Macau while Chow Sang Sang's mainland store count keeps shrinking. Luk Fook and Emperor Watch & Jewellery both sit at protection under test.

Fashion retail. Esprit Holdings landed in the Little protection left standing in the July 2026 assessment, among the most exposed companies on the list, after its retail arms went insolvent in 2024 and the company was reduced to licensing its own name. Giordano (Losing its protection) is squeezed from both sides: Uniqlo on trend and price, Shein and Temu on cost. Bossini, I.T Limited, and Trinity Limited round out a grim apparel picture, each landing in the Little protection left standing. Babel Finance, the crypto lender, also carries a Little protection left standing.

Media and e-commerce. TVB (Losing its protection) is losing younger viewers and ad money to Netflix, YouTube, Tencent Video, and ViuTV. HKTVmall (Losing its protection) saw grocery sales fall 3.5% in FY2025 while ParknShop, Wellcome O2O, and 7-Eleven rapid delivery took share of the same online grocery market.

Crypto. OSL Group and BC Technology are being out-traded in their own licensed market: HashKey Exchange reportedly traded about three times OSL's volume in the first half of 2025 and is pursuing its own Hong Kong IPO. HashKey itself still sits losing its protection, a reminder that winning a fight does not settle the category.

Middlemen. Li & Fung (Losing its protection) has watched Alibaba and Amazon let brands source directly from factories, cutting it out of a role it held for decades. Global Sources faces the same squeeze.

Where AI shows up directly

AI-specific displacement is smaller and sharper in Hong Kong than the headlines suggest. Snapask (Little protection left) is losing homework-help traffic to free AI tutoring tools like Photomath and ChatGPT, which give instant answers without a paid tutor match. Cheap AI coding tools are chipping at content-creation platforms like The Sandbox (Little protection left). GoodNotes sits losing its protection. Meanwhile payments consolidation, driven by AlipayHK and WeChat Pay, keeps draining older systems: TNG Wallet lands in the Little protection left standing, and even Octopus, despite its Hard to displace standing, is not immune to the same pressure.

Property: mostly solid, one exception

Most big developers assessed in July 2026 show little sign of competitive erosion: Sun Hung Kai, Henderson Land, CK Asset, and Wharf all landed in the Hard to displace standing. New World Development is the outlier, rated protection under test, carrying high debt and a collapsed Blackstone rescue deal.

Watch-items, dated

These are checkable claims, not conclusions:

  • By March 2027: whether HashKey Exchange files for or completes its Hong Kong IPO, extending its trading-volume lead over OSL Group.
  • By June 2027: whether TVB reports another year-over-year decline in advertising revenue.
  • By December 2026: whether New World Development completes a new debt restructuring deal or defaults on bonds following the collapsed Blackstone rescue.
  • Ongoing: Chow Tai Fook's same-store sales growth versus Chow Sang Sang's in Hong Kong and Macau; a widening gap means continued share loss at home.
  • Next annual report: HKTVmall's merchant count and grocery GMV, to see whether the FY2025 decline was a one-year dip or a permanent shift.

Questions this data answers

How many Hong Kong companies are rated Hard to displace? Of the 83 Hong Kong companies assessed in July 2026, 20 carry the Hard to displace standing. The group is dominated by property developers, MTR, HKT, AIA, Techtronic Industries, hotel groups, and the University of Hong Kong.

Is AI the main threat to Hong Kong companies? Mostly no. The July 2026 pressure map shows mainland and global scale rivals doing most of the damage: Chow Tai Fook over Chow Sang Sang, Uniqlo and Shein over Giordano and Esprit, Alibaba and Amazon over Li & Fung. Direct AI pressure shows up clearly only in narrower cases like Snapask and The Sandbox.

Which Hong Kong companies are under the most competitive pressure? Trinity Limited and Babel Finance were both rated Little protection left in the July 2026 assessment, among the most exposed companies on the list. Esprit Holdings and Genting Hong Kong (Star Cruises) landed in the same standing, alongside GoGoX, Bossini, TNG Wallet, Snapask, and The Sandbox.

Are Hong Kong's virtual banks doing well? Not in this assessment. Mox Bank, livi Bank, ZA Bank, and Ping An OneConnect Bank all landed losing its protection in July 2026.

Is Hong Kong crypto consolidating? The data points that way. HashKey Exchange reportedly traded about three times OSL's volume in the first half of 2025 and is pursuing an IPO, while OSL Group and BC Technology both sit in weakened standings. Check the IPO watch-item by March 2027.
