Li Ning vs Xtep: Head-to-Head Durability Comparison
Li Ning and Xtep compared on scale, profit trend, and rival pressure using WillItSurvive's July 2026 assessment of 10,525 companies.
Two Chinese sportswear brands under the same squeeze
Li Ning Company Limited and Xtep International Holdings Limited both make physical sportswear, both sell into the same Chinese market, and both are losing ground to the same dominant rival, Anta. In the WillItSurvive assessment of 10,525 companies assessed in July 2026, both carry the same standing label: Protection under test. That label means the evidence points in both directions at once, and this head-to-head, one of 412 comparisons in the assessment, explains why.
The short version from our July 2026 assessment: Li Ning holds the stronger position because its revenue base is roughly twice Xtep's size, giving it more room to absorb the same rival pressure that is squeezing both companies harder each quarter. But Xtep has the better recent profit trend, and Li Ning's core apparel business is shrinking. Neither picture is clean.
We never declare an outcome for either company. What follows is what the data showed as of July 2026, with dated watch-items you can check yourself.
Scale: Li Ning is twice the size
Of the six dimensions compared in the July 2026 assessment, financial scale is Li Ning's clearest edge. Li Ning reported FY2025 revenue of RMB29,598 million, about double Xtep's RMB14,151.1 million, per the July 2026 WillItSurvive comparison. Scale matters here because both companies face the same rival pressure from Anta. A larger revenue base means more room to absorb lost share, fund product development, and ride out discounting wars without gutting the business.
Xtep also differs structurally: it sells licensed Saucony and Merrell gear alongside its own brand, while Li Ning's business runs entirely under its own name. That gives Xtep some diversification but also dependence on licenses it does not own.
Profit trend: Xtep is moving in the right direction, Li Ning is not
Here the edge flips. Xtep's net profit rose 10.8% to RMB1,371.6 million in FY2025, while Li Ning's net profit fell 2.6% to RMB2,936 million in the same year, per the July 2026 assessment. Li Ning's decline came despite total revenue rising 3.2%, which is the more worrying combination: growing the top line while earning less on it points to margin compression, not a temporary sales dip.
Li Ning's apparel segment is the visible source of that pressure. Apparel sales slipped 3% even as group revenue grew, and gross margin came in at 49.0% for FY2025. Xtep's margin figure is not in our record, but the discounting behavior on its core brand, covered below, points to margin pressure there too.
So in FY2025, Xtep earned less in absolute terms (RMB1,371.6 million versus Li Ning's RMB2,936 million) but grew that number by double digits while Li Ning's shrank.
Rival pressure: Xtep is squeezed from two directions
Both companies face elevated pressure from rivals in the July 2026 assessment, but not equally. Xtep is squeezed by both Anta and Li Ning at once, while Li Ning's pressure comes mainly from Anta alone.
The pressure shows up in Xtep's pricing behavior. Xtep's core brand fell mid-single digits in Q2 2026 while running 70-75% discounts to move product, per the July 2026 assessment. Discounting at that depth moves inventory but erodes brand positioning and margin, and it is the kind of behavior that can quickly consume the profit growth that currently distinguishes Xtep from Li Ning.
Where they are even
Three of the six dimensions in the comparison came out even:
- Staying power of the core product. Both are struggling, in different ways. Li Ning's apparel sales slipped 3% with margin compression; Xtep's core brand fell mid-single digits under heavy discounting. Neither has a stable core right now.
- AI exposure. Both make physical sportswear that AI is unlikely to replace. This is one of the few durability dimensions where neither company has a problem: shoes and apparel sold through stores are not a product a model can absorb.
- Copyability. For both, a larger rival could plausibly copy designs and distribution. Anta's scale makes this a live consideration for each.
Why both land at protection under test
In our six-label standing scale, protection under test sits in the middle: not fortified, not losing its protection, but genuinely contested. For Li Ning, the case for durability is scale and a 49.0% gross margin; the case against is a shrinking apparel segment and profit falling while revenue grows. For Xtep, the case for is double-digit profit growth; the case against is greater pressure from rivals than Li Ning faces, since it is squeezed by both Anta and Li Ning at once, and a core brand that needs 70-75% discounts to move product.
We treat every standing as a read of the evidence, not a forecast. In a blind backtest on 116 dead companies, using only facts that were knowable 18 months before each company's failure, the assessment flagged 90% of them negatively in advance and issued zero safe calls, which is why we treat these standings as evidence-weighted reads rather than predictions.
What to watch (dated, verify yourself)
As of July 2026, three watch-items separate these two stories:
- Depth of Xtep's core-brand discounting, currently 70-75%. If discounting deepens further, it could erase the profit growth that currently sets Xtep apart from Li Ning.
- Li Ning's apparel segment sales trend. Continued declines in apparel would keep pressuring group margins already down to 49.0%.
- Anta's ongoing market share gains. Further growth by Anta squeezes both companies, but Xtep's exposure to both Anta and Li Ning at once suggests it has less room left to absorb additional loss.
Questions this data answers
Li Ning vs Xtep, which is bigger? Li Ning's FY2025 revenue of RMB29,598 million is about twice Xtep's RMB14,151.1 million. That scale gives Li Ning more room to absorb pressure from Anta and other rivals.
Which company is growing profit faster? Xtep. Its net profit rose 10.8% to RMB1,371.6 million in FY2025, while Li Ning's fell 2.6% to RMB2,936 million even though Li Ning's revenue grew 3.2%.
Which brand faces more pressure from competitors? Xtep. It is squeezed by both Anta and Li Ning at once, and its core brand fell mid-single digits in Q2 2026 under 70-75% discounting, while Li Ning's pressure comes mainly from Anta alone.
Could AI replace either company's product? No. Both sell physical shoes and apparel through stores rather than digital services, so AI absorption is not a durability risk for either in the July 2026 assessment.
Does Xtep depend on licensed brands more than Li Ning? Yes. Xtep sells licensed Saucony and Merrell gear alongside its own brand, while Li Ning's business runs entirely under its own name.
