What happened

Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing of US subsidiaries and UK parent entering administration (August 2023)

Why it did not hold

Babylon Health is liquidated; its successor eMed runs a shrunken GP at Hand service in London under continuing regulatory scrutiny.

Babylon Health was a telehealth and AI chatbot company that tried to replace traditional doctor visits with digital-first care. It failed because its contracts with major customers like Centene and the NHS could be canceled anytime, its AI medical advice was publicly criticized as unreliable, and it lost money faster as it grew bigger. When Centene dropped them in 2024, the company had no other real business to fall back on and shut down. A smaller successor company now runs one NHS clinic in London, but it faces pharmacy compliance problems and operates at a much smaller scale than the original company.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. Babylon's own triage AI was the product; a 2018 Lancet critique discredited its clinical claims years before collapse.
02
Bigger players: Centene and NHS commissioners. Centene, ~50% of 2022 revenue, declined to renew and NHS Wolverhampton cancelled its contract early, gutting the customer base.
03
What protected it. None apparent: contracts with NHS and Centene were at-will, revocable, and not tied to any unique technology.
