What happened

Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing (December 2023)

Why it did not hold

Bird survived bankruptcy and found a thin profit on paper, but it still rents the same scooters in the same cities as Lime, with no lock on either.

Bird Global operates electric scooters that people rent by the minute in cities. The company looks profitable on paper only because it ignores the cost of scooters wearing out and breaking, which is how it got into bankruptcy trouble before. Lime, a larger competitor, can easily copy Bird's entire business since they both need the same city permits and buy similar hardware; Bird's main deal is letting people rent scooters through Lyft's app, but Lyft could switch to Lime anytime. The one thing that could change everything is whether Bird can actually make cash without raising more money from investors, and whether it can keep Lyft as its sole way to reach customers.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up here as routing and fleet rebalancing software, not as a rival product threatening riders or revenue.
02
Bigger players: Lime. Lime already runs the same scooters in the same cities at bigger scale, with nothing stopping it from copying any Bird move.
03
What protected it. City permits already won and the Lyft app placement, but both are contracts that can be pulled, not owned assets.
