What happened

The company ceased to operate independently.

Why it did not hold

Busuu sells language courses through a parent company, Chegg, that is shrinking fast while free AI tools take over the same tasks Busuu charges for.

Busuu teaches languages through lessons and peer correction, competing with Duolingo and free AI chatbots like ChatGPT that can now do grammar, vocabulary, and speaking practice for nothing. Unlike Duolingo, which reaches millions, Busuu has only about 600 enterprise customers (schools and companies) and 15% revenue growth, making it hard to invest in and easy for competitors to copy. The biggest risk is that Chegg, Busuu's owner, is struggling financially (stock dropped from $113 to $1.02) and may be forced to sell off Busuu or cut its budget, which could destroy the product or shut down the company-sales team that keeps those 600 customers paying.

01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, and other free AI conversation tutors. Free AI chatbots now handle grammar correction and speaking practice, the same tasks Busuu charges for.
02
Bigger players: Duolingo. Duolingo already runs AI-powered speaking and conversation features at far larger scale and lower price.
03
What protected it. Its 600+ corporate clients (Puma, L'Oreal, Uber, OECD) buy structured B2B language training that free chat tools don't replace yet.
