Cheddar

Cheddar was a streaming business-news channel now reduced to a mostly empty shell under PE ownership

What happened

Cheddar News reported hollowed out to effectively no working staff after mass furloughs, following sale to Archetype/Regent LP (January 2024)

Why it did not hold

Cheddar still publishes under opaque PE ownership with no announced staff, strategy, or product distinct from what AI already produces for free.

Cheddar tried to be CNBC for younger people by posting short business news videos and newsletters online. But this approach is not hard to copy: CNBC and Bloomberg simply started making the same short videos for cord-cutters, and now AI tools can automatically summarize news and create video recaps without any human reporters. Cheddar gave up what made it different (relationships with traders and deals with cable TV providers) during layoffs, leaving it as a mostly empty company under private ownership with no public plan to survive or grow.

01
AI pressure: AI market summarization and short-form video generation tools. Cheddar's core product, quick video recaps of market news, is exactly what AI now generates natively and cheaply.
02
Bigger players: CNBC, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance, Fox Business. Bigger business-news players moved into short-form and streaming once cord-cutting hit, leaving Cheddar's format advantage gone.
03
What protected it. None apparent: the trading-floor credibility and carriage deals that once set it apart were dropped during layoffs.
