Daylight (neobank)
Defunct LGBTQ+-focused neobank offering chosen-name debit cards, closed June 2023
Company ceased operations (shutdown announced)
Daylight raised $20 million, reported $1.47 in revenue at one internal meeting, and shut down in June 2023 once big banks could copy its product for free.
Daylight was a bank app that let people customize their debit card with chosen names and offered rewards tied to LGBTQ+ causes. The problem was simple: Chase, Bank of America, and other major banks could add these same features whenever they wanted, and they eventually did. Daylight had no special technology, no legal protection, and couldn't make money from its small group of customers, earning only $1.47 million against a claimed $500 million projection. The one thing that might have saved it was if serving LGBTQ+ customers profitably was actually too hard for big banks to do, but the founder himself said on record that it probably isn't, which basically admitted the company never had a real reason to exist.
