What happened

Company shut down/wound down after failing to close a fire-sale asset acquisition (June 2017)

Why it did not hold

Hello (Sense) built a single-purpose sleep gadget that bigger platforms replicated for free, and it ran out of runway in 2017.

Hello sold a small device that sat on your nightstand and tracked your sleep without touching you, then woke you up at the best time. It was not hard to copy because the technology was straightforward, and companies like Apple, Fitbit, and Withings quickly added the same features to products customers already owned (watches, alarm clocks, fitness trackers). The company raised over $40 million but only sold about 21,000 devices before shutting down in 2017 when Fitbit would not buy it. Today, sleep tracking is built into phones, watches, and smart home devices for free, making a standalone sleep device unnecessary.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. Company folded in 2017 before modern AI sleep-scoring tools existed to eat it; the wristwear era did that job first.
02
Bigger players: Apple, Fitbit/Google, Withings. Apple bought Beddit and Fitbit/Withings already had sleep tracking in customers' hands, leaving Sense's single-purpose device stranded.
03
What protected it. None. The device had no clinical certification, no owned dataset at scale, and no lock-in once bigger platforms bundled sleep tracking for free.
