What happened

Shutdown of Hipmunk announced/completed by SAP Concur (January 2020)

Why it did not hold

Hipmunk was a search interface with no inventory of its own, and Google proved anyone could rebuild that interface for free within a year.

Hipmunk let people search and compare flights and hotels in one place by pulling information from other travel websites. It was not hard to copy because Hipmunk did not own any airlines, hotels, or booking systems, only the search interface. Google Flights launched in 2011 and did the same thing better, and now AI travel assistants like ChatGPT can search flights and hotels directly without needing a separate website. The company's founders tried a different approach with Flight Penguin, a subscription tool for Chrome, to see if charging users directly instead of relying on commissions would have saved the original idea.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. Hipmunk dissolved January 2020, before LLM travel assistants existed, so no AI product ever had a live target to eat.
02
Bigger players: Google Flights. Google Flights launched in 2011, just 13 months after Hipmunk, and copied the same comparison layer at Google's distribution scale.
03
What protected it. None: Hipmunk ran on third-party data (Orbitz, then ITA Software) with no proprietary inventory or booking lock-in.
