What happened

HP Inc. announced acquisition of Humane's core assets and shutdown of the AI Pin device (February 2025)

Why it did not hold

Humane built a standalone AI wearable right as Apple, Google, and Samsung put the same intelligence into phones for free, and it did not survive the year.

Humane made a small wearable device that let people talk to an AI assistant, but charged $699 upfront plus $24 per month. The problem: Apple, Google, and Samsung already put the same AI features directly into phones that people carry every day, at no extra cost. Humane had nothing that made it special or hard for phone makers to copy, no exclusive data or deals to lock customers in, and no advantage in the actual AI technology itself since everyone uses similar models from companies like OpenAI. The one thing that could have saved it would have been making something so useful and different that people wanted to carry both a phone and the pin together, but that never happened.

01
AI pressure: Apple Intelligence, Google Gemini, Samsung Galaxy AI. Native phone AI assistants gave people the same capability Humane sold, without a second device or monthly fee.
02
Bigger players: Apple, Google, Samsung. Phone makers shipped AI assistants into devices people already owned, leaving no reason to carry a second $699 gadget.
03
What protected it. None apparent. HP paid $116M for the patents and CosmOS software, not for a going business.
