Kite (AI code autocomplete)
Dead AI code autocomplete tool for developers, shut down November 2022
Company ceased operations and stopped supporting its software (public shutdown announcement)
Kite reached half a million users on a free tool but never converted them to payers, then closed months after Microsoft shipped Copilot inside the same editors it depended on.
Kite built a tool that watched what you typed and suggested code completions using artificial intelligence. The problem was that Kite was just a thin layer on top of AI models, with nothing special that competitors couldn't copy or do better. Microsoft and GitHub had all the advantages: they owned the code editor most developers used (VS Code), they hosted the code people worked on (GitHub), and they partnered with OpenAI to build their own version called Copilot in 2022, which they could give directly to their locked-in users. Kite tried to make money with a free version supported by ads, which meant paying customers had no reason to upgrade, and the company never found a real revenue stream. Without billions to spend on AI model development and already facing a better rival with deeper hooks into the developer workflow, Kite had no path forward and shut down in late 2022.
