What happened

Olive AI shut down, selling core business units to Waystar and Humata Health and winding down operations (October 2023)

Why it did not hold

Olive AI folded in October 2023 after spending nearly $900M without building any real defense against cheaper AI tools or bigger rivals; its pieces now sit inside Waystar and Humata Health.

Olive AI built software to automate healthcare paperwork and approvals using robotic process automation dressed up as artificial intelligence. The company had no special data, no exclusive contracts, no deep ties to hospital systems, and no technology that competitors or newer AI tools could not copy. Waystar and Epic Systems (which controls how hospitals connect systems) moved in, Waystar shipped better automation with higher success rates, and generative AI made the old approach obsolete. The healthcare administrative market is real and huge, but Olive AI's specific way of attacking it turned out to be easy to replace once the market proved there was money to be made.

01
AI pressure: Generic AI automation tools (e.g., Notable Health, Regard). Cheaper AI automation tools shipped and matched Olive's RPA claims, eroding its edge before cash ran out.
02
Bigger players: Waystar and Epic Systems. Waystar bought Olive's clearinghouse and patient-access units after collapse; Epic's EHR lock-in kept standalone tools like Olive on the outside.
03
What protected it. None found: Olive had no proprietary data, integration lock-in, or regulatory approval to stop rivals or AI copies.
