What happened

Shutdown of Protocol announced by Politico Media Group; site closed by end of year (December 2022)

Why it did not hold

Protocol ran for under three years on ad revenue alone and closed when it missed its targets and never built a paid product.

Protocol gave away technology news and analysis for free, relying on ads to make money. It competed directly with paid outlets like The Information, Axios, and Bloomberg's tech teams, but never built a subscription business that could survive when tech advertising spending dried up in 2022. AI tools that now automatically summarize tech news would make this exact business model even harder today, since readers could get similar information for free from a chatbot instead.

01
AI pressure: AI-generated news summarization tools. AI summarizers scaled after Protocol's 2022 shutdown, so they were not the cause of its collapse.
02
Bigger players: The Information, Axios, Bloomberg, WSJ and NYT tech desks. These outlets already had live tech coverage and subscription products while Protocol stayed free and ad-only.
03
What protected it. None: Protocol never shipped the paid subscription tier it planned, leaving it fully exposed to ad-market swings.
