Quibi
Quibi was a mobile-only, short-form video app charging for 10-minute premium episodes.
Quibi announced it would wind down operations after subscriber struggles
Quibi spent $1.75B chasing a format gap that existed because no one wanted to pay for it, not because giants were blocked from it.
Quibi tried to sell 10-minute videos through a paid subscription, betting people would pay for short clips they could watch on their phones. But TikTok and YouTube already gave people free short videos, and Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max already gave people premium shows and movies for similar prices. Quibi lost 90 out of every 100 people who tried it because no one wanted to pay for something the free apps and bigger subscription services already offered better. The company spent $1.75 billion testing an idea that had no real customers, shut down in December 2020, and sold its content library to Roku; there is nothing left to watch for.
