What happened

Company announced shutdown of operations (proptech/fintech real estate startup) (August 2022)

Why it did not hold

Reali chased the same consumer real estate bundle as bigger, better-funded rivals and ran out of runway when rates spiked in 2022.

Reali tried to do everything in home buying: sell houses, provide mortgages, handle paperwork, and buy homes for inventory, all for a flat fee instead of traditional commissions. But Redfin, Zillow, Opendoor, and Better.com were already doing the exact same thing, so Reali had nothing unique to offer customers. When interest rates shot up in 2022 and the housing market cooled, Reali's pile of unsold homes became too expensive to hold, and the company ran out of money because investors stopped funding startups that lose cash during downturns.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI played no role in Reali's collapse; the company shut down in 2022 before AI tools reshaped real estate workflows.
02
Bigger players: Redfin, Zillow, Opendoor, Better.com. These rivals already sold the same flat-fee, salaried-agent, and power-buying bundle, so Reali had no distinct pitch left to make.
03
What protected it. None remains; Reali closed operations entirely, laying off most staff by September 9, 2022.
