The Outline
Defunct millennial-culture digital magazine, shut down in 2020
BDG laid off The Outline's entire editorial staff, shutting the brand down
The Outline ran on taste and sponsorships with no owned distribution, lost money for years, and closed in 2020; the domain has sat unused for six years.
The Outline was a beautiful, opinion-driven news and culture website that tried to make money through brand partnerships and ads, but it never found enough paying customers. It was easy for bigger competitors like Vox and BuzzFeed to copy its style and editorial voice, and nothing stopped those larger companies from doing the same thing better with more resources. The real threat now is that AI tools can generate similar commentary and news roundups automatically, which makes the curated human-voice model The Outline relied on potentially replaceable.
