What happened

February 2024 announcement of hundreds of layoffs and shutdown of Vice.com's newsroom publishing (February 2024)

Why it did not hold

Vice survives as a shrinking, debt-owned shell testing studio and licensing deals while AI search and bigger media owners take the ground it used to hold.

Vice Media makes videos, articles, and branded content for advertisers, but it has lost most of its value since 2017 and cut its staff by 40 percent. The problem is that AI can now write simple articles and search engines show answers without sending readers to Vice's site, which hurts ad revenue, and bigger companies like Netflix and Amazon make their own shows more cheaply. The key thing to watch is whether Vice's film and TV studio closes or gets sold off in the next few months, which would show whether the company is heading toward a fire sale like BuzzFeed and Vox did in 2026.

01
AI pressure: Google AI Overviews and AI search summarizing news/service content. AI search answers replace the listicles and explainer posts that used to drive traffic to Vice's remaining digital pages.
02
Bigger players: Dotdash Meredith, People Inc., Penske Media, and streamers' in-house studios (Netflix, Amazon MGM). Bigger publishers and studio-owned streamers absorb ad dollars, production deals, and talent that Vice can no longer compete for.
03
What protected it. None apparent: no cash cushion, no owned platform, and its former peers BuzzFeed and Vox just sold off in 2026.
