Yik Yak

Anonymous campus posting app, revived brand now owned by Sidechat's parent company

What happened

The company ceased to operate independently.

Why it did not hold

The Yik Yak name survives inside a rival's parent company while Fizz builds the campus network Yik Yak once owned.

Yik Yak lets college students post and vote on messages anonymously on campus, moderated by upvotes and downvotes. The core idea is simple enough that Fizz, a competitor with much more funding and presence on 620+ campuses, has already built the same thing better, while bigger platforms like Reddit, Discord, and Instagram could easily add anonymous posting if they wanted to. The brand recognition Yik Yak still has matters most right now, but that could evaporate if the company's mysterious ownership change in mid-2025 leads to a quiet shutdown or merger, if a major safety incident triggers campus bans, or if the pending legal case in July 2026 goes badly.

01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the threat here; the app's problem is a better-funded human rival copying its exact feature set.
02
Bigger players: Fizz. Fizz raised $41.5M, grew to 620+ campuses, and shipped a marketplace while Yik Yak shipped nothing new for 18 months.
03
What protected it. Brand recognition from its 2014 to 2017 run is the only thing still worth anything here.
