The call

ABI Research has the data and relationships to survive, but its cheaper report subscriptions sit exactly where free AI tools are starting to compete.

ABI Research sells detailed reports and expert advice about technology markets to companies that need to understand trends and plan investments. The company has real advantages: it has conducted thousands of interviews over 35 years and built datasets competitors would take years to copy. However, free or cheap AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity can now answer many of the same questions instantly, which threatens the lower-priced report business. The one thing that could change the picture is whether ABI's custom ChatGPT tool (launched in October 2024) becomes so useful and deeply woven into clients' workflows that they stick with it instead of switching to generic AI, or whether it stays just a convenience feature that doesn't stop people from leaving.

Why
01
AI pressure: Perplexity Pro, Claude Pro, ChatGPT. Free generic AI tools now answer the same market questions ABI's syndicated reports used to charge for, squeezing subscription renewals. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Omdia, Counterpoint Research, IDC. Equal-sized rivals compete for the same analyst-research budgets and could copy ABI's AI-assistant approach before it locks clients in. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 35 years of proprietary interview data (2,000-3,000 interviews a year) and direct analyst relationships that generic chatbots cannot replicate.
What would change this call
ABI Research discloses subscription renewal or churn rates for its syndicated-report base. Would show whether generic AI is actually displacing ABI's core low-tier revenue.
Ask ABI gets embedded into client daily workflows versus remaining a search convenience. Would show whether ABI built real lock-in or just a thin ChatGPT wrapper.
Omdia, Counterpoint, or IDC launch a comparable LLM-based research assistant. Would show whether Ask ABI's edge is temporary or a lasting differentiator.
