The call

Ably leads Korean fashion resale by users and revenue, but its path to steady profit is still forming while Musinsa and AliExpress sit close by.

Ably is South Korea's biggest fashion shopping app with 8.79 million monthly users, built on connecting sellers and buyers plus using its own data to improve recommendations. The company faces real trouble: it made money in 2023 but lost 15.4 billion won in 2024, and even though losses shrank in 2025, the money it spends on ads is not bringing back enough sales to justify the cost. Ably's main rivals are Musinsa and 29CM (which merged), the giant general retailer Coupang, and AliExpress, which is especially tricky because it is now a board member and strategic investor in Ably. The next year or two will tell the story: if Ably can prove it can make money and stop its advertising from becoming a leaky bucket, it survives; if losses creep back up or users drift to Musinsa or AliExpress instead, the company will be in real danger.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Ably uses AI internally for features like AI Profile; no AI product is taking its sellers or buyers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Musinsa (with 29CM acquisition), AliExpress. Musinsa's 29CM buy gives it a direct women's fashion rival with MAU close to Ably's; AliExpress, a board-seat investor, is #2 shopping app in Korea. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Two-sided marketplace with its own sellers, fulfillment, and buyer data, plus the largest fashion app audience in Korea.

Questions people ask
Is Ably profitable as of 2026?
Not yet on an annual basis. Ably's FY2025 results (reported April 10, 2026) show revenue of KRW 369.7 billion, up 10.6%, but still an operating loss of KRW 4.3 billion, though that loss narrowed 72% from FY2024's KRW 15.4 billion loss.
Who owns Ably, the Korean fashion app?
Ably is privately held and VC-backed. In December 2024, Alibaba Group invested KRW 100 billion (about $71.3M) for roughly a 5% stake, valuing Ably at KRW 3 trillion (~$2.16B) and making it a Korean unicorn.
Who is Ably's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Musinsa (which acquired 29CM to push into women's fashion) is the closest rival. By app usage, Coupang and AliExpress ranked #1 and #2 in Korea shopping apps as of October 2024, ahead of Ably's #3 overall ranking.
Could AI replace Ably's business?
Unlikely soon. Ably's own AI Profile virtual try-on feature reportedly drove a company-claimed 2.7x traffic increase and 5x sales growth within two months (per May 2026 reporting), but its moat is seller relationships, fulfillment, and first-party data, not a model a competitor could easily copy.
How big is Ably's user base compared to rivals?
As of October 2024, Ably had 8.79 million monthly active users, ranking #1 among Korean fashion apps and ahead of Musinsa's 7.68 million MAU, though still behind Coupang and AliExpress in overall shopping app usage.
Does Ably charge sellers commission?
No. Ably has run a zero-commission baseline model ('Sellers Zero') since 2019, paired with its 'Ably Partners' fulfillment service to lower entry barriers for small fashion sellers on its marketplace.
