The call

Addi holds a regulated lending position with real merchant reach, but its own numbers on scale and revenue still don't agree with each other.

Addi lends money to shoppers at the checkout counter across Colombia, using a banking license and relationships with 39,000 to 76,000 stores to embed credit into point-of-sale systems. It is hard to copy because a banking license takes years to get and Addi already has merchant relationships locked in, but Nubank (a much larger digital bank with 5 million Colombian customers) could build the same product if it chose to, and artificial intelligence tools could eventually help other banks underwrite loans just as well. The real question is whether Addi can keep profits up if interest rates fall or if people stop paying back their loans, because the company carries over $680 million in debt and its disclosed customer counts swing wildly from 3 million to 5.5 million, making it hard to know how big it actually is.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic AI-underwriting-as-a-service providers. AI could commoditize credit scoring, but Addi's banking license and merchant lock-in blockade quick copycats. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nubank. Nubank has 5M Colombian customers and digital reach but hasn't shipped a competing BNPL product yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A Colombian banking license plus merchant contracts across 1,034 municipalities that block fast replication.
What would change this call
Nubank launches a point-of-sale BNPL product in Colombia and signs merchant contracts. Shows Addi's merchant-distribution moat is being directly challenged by a well-funded rival.
Colombian consumer loan delinquency or charge-off rates rise sharply in 2026-2027. Would test whether Addi's profitability holds up under a credit-cycle downturn.
Addi publishes audited financials reconciling its conflicting customer, merchant, and revenue figures. Would clarify whether Addi's true scale matches its higher or lower reported numbers.

  • Conflicting customer/merchant/revenue disclosures within the same week create scale ambiguity. Severity: medium
  • New 2026 banking license requires deposit-taking execution with unproven funding flow. Severity: medium
  • Nubank or large banks could ship competing AI-underwritten BNPL products. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Addi profitable in 2026?
Yes. Addi reported $6M in pre-tax profit in Q1 2026 alone and eight consecutive profitable quarters, following $6.5M net profit after tax for full-year 2025, per company disclosures cited by Scenius LatAm on July 6, 2026.
Who owns Addi and did it just raise funding?
Addi is privately held. It closed an $85-86M Series D around July 1, 2026, co-led by Citius and BTG Pactual, with GIC, Monashees, Quona, Union Square Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz participating; Citius is joining the board.
Could AI replace Addi's lending business?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Addi's Superintendencia Financiera banking license and merchant network across 1,034 municipalities (as of July 2026) are regulatory and distribution moats AI models cannot replicate, though AI can commoditize underwriting itself.
Who is Addi's biggest competitor?
Nubank, with about 5 million Colombian customers as of July 2026, is the most-watched potential threat but has not yet shipped a competing point-of-sale BNPL product there; SisteCredito and Kueski are closer direct BNPL rivals.
What is Addi worth now versus its peak valuation?
Caplight estimated Addi's post-money valuation at roughly $350M as of June 30, 2026, well below the $700M+ Series C valuation from December 2021, after the CEO disclosed a voluntary ~50% markdown in 2024.
How much debt is Addi carrying?
Addi's total debt commitments exceeded $680M as of July 2, 2026, including a $150M J.P. Morgan structured credit facility, plus prior facilities from Goldman Sachs, Fasanara, BBVA Spark and Victory Park Capital.
