The call

Aderant holds law firm financial and matter data through long contracts, while Intapp's AI-driven tools compete for the same work without yet displacing it.

Aderant sells financial and billing software to large law firms. It is hard to replace because firms store years of client data, trust accounting records, and compliance information in Aderant's system, and switching to a new provider takes 7 to 15 years and costs a lot of money. The real competition is Intapp, which is pushing AI tools into the same market and winning deals at top law firms, plus Roper Technologies (Aderant's owner) slowing down spending in 2026, which could limit how fast Aderant can build new AI features.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Aderant builds AI into its own platform, billing, collections, agents, rather than facing an outside AI predator today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Intapp. Intapp's AI-agentic work-to-cash tools are live and pushing into large firms where Aderant runs Expert Sierra. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Firm financial and trust-accounting data sits inside Aderant for years, and switching systems takes 7 to 15 years.
What would change this call
Intapp announces an Am Law 100 firm switching from Aderant Expert Sierra to Intapp. Would show Aderant losing marquee accounts to a named rival, not just adjacent modules.
Number of Agent Center AI agents live by end of 2026 versus the 13 to 15 promised. Would show whether Aderant's AI roadmap is on track or slipping.
Naming of a permanent Aderant CEO to replace Chris Cartrett after his August 2026 departure. Would show whether leadership transition disrupts or preserves roadmap continuity.
Key numbers
  • 56% share among 150+ seat ANZ firms vs Thomson Reuters Elite (2023)
  • 275+ firms on Expert Sierra, 23% are Am Law 200 (2026-05-11)
  • Only 3 of 13-15 promised AI agents live (2026-05)
Named risks
  • CEO Cartrett departs Aug 1, 2026 with only interim leadership (Deane Price) and permanent search ongoing. Severity: medium
  • Roper parent guided to slower 5-6% organic growth for 2026 after Q4 2025 revenue miss. Severity: medium
  • Agent Center commitment of 13-15 agents by end 2026 with only a handful live as of May 2026 creates delivery execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Intapp's agentic AI push and large installed Am Law 100 base could contest Aderant's large-firm accounts. Severity: medium
  • Any equity compensation is Roper (ROP) parent stock, not illiquid Aderant-specific upside. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Aderant profitable?
Aderant does not disclose standalone financials since parent Roper Technologies does not break out unit-level profit. Roper called Q2 2025 a record quarter for Aderant, and CEO Chris Cartrett said 2024 was the largest growth year in company history, as of 2025-07-21.
Who owns Aderant?
Aderant is owned by Roper Technologies (Nasdaq: ROP), which acquired it from Madison Dearborn Partners in October 2015 for 675 million dollars net of 20 million in cash tax benefits. Before that, Vista Equity Partners owned Aderant from 2008 to 2014.
Could AI replace Aderant?
Unlikely soon. Aderant is layering AI (askMADDI, Stridyn Analytics, Agent Center) onto its own system of record rather than being displaced by it. As of 2026-05-11 it had 12 AI products live and planned 13 to 15 total agents by end of 2026.
Is Aderant losing ground to Thomson Reuters Elite?
No, the opposite. An independent 2023 review of 36 ANZ law firms with 150+ seats found Aderant held 56 percent market share versus Thomson Reuters Elite, partly due to Elite's disruptive migration process, per a 2024-04-19 report.
Who is Aderant's biggest competitor?
Its main rivals are Thomson Reuters Elite and Intapp (Nasdaq: INTA). Intapp claims its Time product is installed at 96 of the Am Law 100 as of mid-2026 (vendor-claimed), making it the more actively contesting competitor in large-firm accounts.
Is Aderant hiring?
Yes. At its October 2025 London Momentum event, CEO Chris Cartrett said Aderant was actively hiring, citing around 46 open job postings, consistent with the company's self-reported growth narrative through 2025 and 2026.
