Accounting, tax and business software

175 companies assessed. 87 of them, 49.7%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.

The picture

Accounting, tax and legal software is splitting into two very different worlds. One side is companies that sit inside a country's tax system or a licensed profession, like Tally in India, TKC and OBIC in Japan, and MISA in Vietnam. These run on government-mandated filing rules and decades of local trust, so an AI chatbot can't just replace them, and their pressure scores stay near zero. The other side is generic software that any AI-equipped competitor or even a platform giant can rebuild in months. That's where the damage is concentrated: eDiscovery and legal-hold tools like Ipro, Zapproved, and DTI are being folded into bigger platforms or undercut by Microsoft bundling the same feature for free, and contract tools like LawGeex and Lexion have already been picked apart and absorbed. In the middle, mainstream small-business accounting software (Reckon, MYOB, Yayoi, TaxSlayer) is losing ground to cloud rivals like Xero, QuickBooks, and freee that shipped AI bookkeeping first. The deciding factor across the whole sector is simple: does the product depend on a government license, professional certification, or deep workflow lock-in, or is it a feature that a bigger platform can bundle in for free. Companies with the former keep growing quietly; companies with the latter are getting swallowed one product line at a time.

Questions people ask
Will Xero replace QuickBooks and other accounting software companies with AI?
Xero has already taken over 60% of the cloud accounting market in Australia and New Zealand, pushing MYOB into a shrinking number-two spot, and it keeps chipping away at Intuit QuickBooks' small-business share in the US too. The pattern is about who ships AI bookkeeping features first, and Xero has consistently been ahead.
Is TurboTax going to lose customers to free tax software?
Intuit's TurboTax faces real pressure from free IRS Direct File and free-tier competitors like Cash App Taxes and FreeTaxUSA on the DIY side, but Intuit is holding its overall position by adding AI autofill features. TaxSlayer, a smaller budget competitor, is getting squeezed harder from both the free tier below and TurboTax's AI features above.
What happened to LawGeex AI contract review?
LawGeex's enterprise business was sold off in pieces during 2023, with LegalSifter and Robin AI absorbing its clients. The company effectively no longer operates as an independent seller.
Are eDiscovery companies like Ipro and Zapproved shutting down?
Ipro Tech is being retired as a brand after Reveal acquired it and is migrating its customers onto its own platform. Zapproved is shrinking inside Exterro as Microsoft's free Purview legal-hold tool and AI review features from Relativity and Everlaw pull its customers away.
Which accounting software companies are safest from AI disruption?
Software tied to a country's tax filing rules or a licensed profession is holding up best, including Tally in India, TKC and OBIC in Japan, and MISA in Vietnam. These face almost no visible customer loss because switching means changing how a business files with the government.
Is Avalara losing customers to smaller sales tax startups?
Avalara is facing pressure at the small-business end from cheaper entrants like Anrok, Numeral, Zamp, and Kintsugi, plus Stripe Tax bundling free tax calculation with payments. It's still holding its position with caveats rather than losing ground outright.
