The call

Atome is growing fast but leans on parent cash and bank credit lines while super-apps sell BNPL from inside their own checkout screens.

Advance Intelligence Group runs two services: checking people's identities for banks (ADVANCE.AI) and offering buy-now-pay-later loans through Atome. The identity business is hard to replace because it has government approvals and data about 40 million people's payment habits, but it is a small part of the company. The lending business is the money maker, growing fast at 70 percent yearly, but it is getting squeezed by giant ride-sharing and shopping apps like Grab, GoTo, and Shopee that offer loans built right into their own apps, giving them an unfair advantage. The company needed a big cash injection from its owner in 2026, which suggests the lending business does not make money reliably yet. Whether Grab invests in or partners with Advance Intelligence Group will decide everything: a deal would solve the company's biggest problem of reaching customers, but if those talks fail and competitors keep grabbing market share, Atome could end up in real trouble.

Why
01
AI pressure: Frontier multimodal AI APIs (e.g. AWS Nova 2 style tools). Cloud AI labs are pushing vision and fraud-detection APIs that could let rivals build KYC checks without paying ADVANCE.AI. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Grab (GXS Bank/GrabFinance), GoTo (GoPayLater), Sea/Shopee (SPayLater). Super-apps already run BNPL inside their own checkout flows, cutting Atome out of the distribution it needs to grow GMV. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. ADVANCE.AI holds regulatory accreditation and repayment data on 40M+ consumers that a checkout feature can't easily copy.
What would change this call
Whether Grab's reported >$100M investment in Atome Financial closes and on what terms. A closed deal signals distribution partnership; a collapsed one signals Atome stays checkout-disadvantaged.
Atome Financial posts two consecutive profitable quarters without parent capital injections. Would show BNPL unit economics work standalone, not just with subsidy.
Another nine-figure capital injection from Advance Intelligence Group parent within 12 months. Would indicate Atome cannot sustain growth on its own loan book economics.
Key numbers
  • Atome GMV grew over 70% YoY in December 2025 (2025-12-31)
  • Atome annualized net revenue passed US$500M in 2025 (2025-12-31)
  • Parent injected US$149M into Atome in Q2 2026 (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • Atome relied on a $149M parent injection in Q2 2026 rather than organic profit, unproven unit economics. Severity: high
  • Grab, GoTo and Shopee own native super-app checkout distribution that standalone Atome app lacks. Severity: high
  • Grab investment talks reported June 2026 remain unfinalized, leaving funding and strategic lock-in uncertain. Severity: medium
  • Valuation stuck at $2B since September 2021 despite revenue growth, raising down-round risk. Severity: medium
  • Frontier vision and multimodal AI models could commoditize low-end KYC verification tasks. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Advance Intelligence Group profitable in 2026?
Atome Financial's FY2024 operating income rose 63% year over year to US$236M, but the parent company injected US$149M into Atome in Q2 2026 toward what it called a sustained profitability phase, indicating the BNPL unit was not yet self-funding as of mid-2026.
Who owns Advance Intelligence Group?
It is privately held, backed by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Warburg Pincus, Northstar Group, Vision Plus Capital and Singapore's EDBI. Valuation crossed US$2 billion at its September 2021 Series D, with cumulative equity funding topping US$700M by May 2023.
Who is Atome's biggest competitor?
Grab, via GXS Bank and GrabFinance, is the sharpest threat: its lending book reached a US$1.44B gross loan portfolio in Q1 2026, distributed natively through Grab's super-app checkout, an advantage Atome's standalone app lacks. GoTo and Sea's Shopee pose similar embedded-finance pressure.
Could AI replace ADVANCE.AI's KYC business?
Core tasks like document and biometric verification are exposed as frontier vision models commoditize low-end checks, but ADVANCE.AI holds harder-to-replace regulatory accreditation, including a September 2024 agreement to become an accredited credit bureau with the Philippines' Credit Information Corporation.
Is Grab actually investing in Atome Financial?
As of June 2026, Grab was reported to be in talks to join a new Atome Financial funding round of over US$100M, but the deal structure and terms were not finalized, per CB Insights reporting dated 2026-06-10.
Is Advance Intelligence Group planning an IPO?
No confirmed IPO plans have surfaced as of mid-2026. The company remains private with a valuation stuck at US$2 billion since its September 2021 Series D, even as Atome's GMV grew over 70% year over year in December 2025.
