The call

AMEC's growth rides on China's chip self-sufficiency push and a market Western rivals are barred from entering.

AMEC makes machines that chip factories use to manufacture semiconductors. It is hard to replace because chip makers like SMIC and TSMC have already installed over 800 of AMEC's machines and spent years qualifying them, meaning switching to a competitor would be expensive and risky. Western companies like Applied Materials and Lam Research cannot sell in China due to US export controls, which gives AMEC room to grow. The one thing that could change everything is if the US tightens export rules further or if AMEC cannot source critical parts domestically when controls get stricter, and also if AMEC's leadership keeps selling large amounts of company stock, which might signal they are worried about the future.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI chip demand feeds AMEC by driving fab capex; no AI product replaces etch and deposition hardware. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: NAURA (Chinese domestic etch and deposition rival). NAURA already ships competing etch and deposition tools in China and is gaining share of the domestic equipment market. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. US export controls keep Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron out of China, and AMEC's tools are already qualified inside 800+ SMIC lines.
What would change this call
BIS expands Entity List or MATCH Act passes within 6 months restricting AMEC inputs. Would show export controls tightening faster than AMEC can localize supply chain.
NAURA reported as displacing AMEC tools at SMIC or Huahong in coming quarters. Would show a domestic rival, not foreign incumbents, eroding AMEC's fab lock-in.
AMEC margins or SIZONE/Zhonggui integration results disclosed in next 1-2 earnings reports. Would show whether the RMB 3.2B acquisition is straining profitability.
Key numbers
  • Q1 2026 revenue RMB 2.915B, up 34.13% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • Q1 2026 R&D spend RMB 908M, 31.14% of revenue (2026-03-31)
  • SMIC has purchased 800+ AMEC etch machines (2026-05-19)
Named risks
  • MATCH Act and expanded BIS Entity List rules could curtail AMEC's supply chain within months. Severity: high
  • Integration execution risk from RMB 3.2B SIZONE acquisition and dilution from RMB 1.5B June 2026 placement. Severity: medium
  • Memory/DRAM demand slowdown could trigger correction in China chip-equipment stock rally. Severity: medium
  • Recurring insider selling by CEO Gerald Yin (e.g. $3.6M and $5.5M disposals in July 2025). Severity: low
  • Piotech and NAURA eroding AMEC's position in deposition niches despite overall growth. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is AMEC profitable in 2026?
Yes. AMEC posted Q1 2026 net profit of RMB 930 million, up 197.2% year over year, on revenue of RMB 2.915 billion (+34.13% YoY), as of March 31, 2026. FY2025 revenue was RMB 12.38 billion, up 36.6% YoY.
Could AI replace AMEC's business?
No. AMEC makes physical etch and deposition equipment with decades of proprietary chamber IP and fab-qualification data at SMIC, TSMC, Samsung and SK Hynix (800+ machines at SMIC alone, per TrendForce, May 2026). AI is a design-cycle tool for its engineers, not a substitute for the hardware.
Who is AMEC's biggest competitor?
NAURA Technology Group is China's largest chip-equipment maker and expected to top RMB 50 billion revenue in 2026, versus AMEC's RMB 12.38 billion in FY2025, making AMEC China's #2 player. Piotech is also gaining, doubling its PECVD share at YMTC to 30% in 2025.
Is it safe to take a job at AMEC?
AMEC's headcount grew to 2,963 employees as of December 31, 2025, up 19.48% year over year, alongside FY2025 revenue growth of 36.6% and Q1 2026 profit growth of 197.2%, signaling active hiring and expansion rather than contraction.
Who owns AMEC?
AMEC is a publicly traded, partly state-backed company listed on Shanghai's STAR Market under ticker 688012.SS since its July 22, 2019 IPO. Institutional holders include Harvest Fund Management (~3.4%), E Fund, GF Fund, and China AMC ETFs, per FT data dated July 7, 2026.
Does AMEC face US export control risk?
Yes. The US BIS added 140 entities and controls on 24 equipment types in December 2024, and a March 28, 2025 Entity List action followed. A proposed MATCH Act targeting DUV lithography sales to China is also advancing as of July 2026.
