Semiconductor companies
160 companies assessed. 73 of them, 45.6%, sit in the two least protected bands, against 53.3% across all 10,525 companies assessed.
Semiconductors are splitting hard into two camps, and the split has almost nothing to do with company size. On one side are the firms that make the machines and materials everyone else needs: chip tool makers like Tokyo Electron, Advantest, Disco, and Shin-Etsu Chemical, plus design software from Cadence. Nobody can skip them regardless of who wins the AI race, so their pressure scores sit near the bottom of the sector. On the other side is a long list of AI accelerator startups (Graphcore, Untether AI, Esperanto, Hailo, Blaize, Rain AI) that raised money to challenge Nvidia directly and are now bankrupt, sold off, or pivoting to licensing because they never got past a handful of design wins before Nvidia's CUDA lock-in and scale closed the door. In between sit the power and auto chip makers, where the fight is more even. BYD Semiconductor is actually taking share from Infineon, while Wolfspeed is losing ground to STMicroelectronics and Infineon in silicon carbide. China's domestic AI chip race is its own story: Huawei's Ascend line dominates over Cambricon and Biren, showing that even inside a protected market, one player can pull far ahead. The one thing deciding survival across all of this is whether a company sells something the whole industry needs no matter who wins AI, or whether it bet its future on out-designing Nvidia at its own game.

- which semiconductor companies are most at risk from AI chip competition
- AI accelerator startups that tried to challenge Nvidia directly are struggling most, including Graphcore, Untether AI, Esperanto Technologies, Hailo, and Blaize. Most have gone bankrupt, sold off, or shifted from selling chips to licensing designs because Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem locked in customers before they could scale.
- is Nvidia unbeatable in AI chips
- Not unbeatable everywhere, but its scale and software lock-in have already ended several rivals, including Esperanto, Untether AI, and Graphcore. In China, Huawei's Ascend line plays a similar role, holding roughly half to two-thirds of the domestic AI chip market ahead of Cambricon and Biren.
- which chip equipment makers are safest from disruption
- Tokyo Electron, Advantest, Disco Corporation, and Shin-Etsu Chemical all show very low pressure scores because chipmakers need their tools and materials no matter which company wins the AI race.
- is Wolfspeed going to survive
- Wolfspeed is losing silicon carbide customers to STMicroelectronics and Infineon, both of which already have established 200mm capacity, and its revenue keeps shrinking year over year, putting it among the weaker positioned chip companies right now.
- who is winning the China AI chip race between Huawei Cambricon and Biren
- Huawei's Ascend chips are well ahead, holding roughly 62% of China's AI accelerator market against Cambricon's 14%, while Biren Technology stays deep in losses. All three are competing for the same domestic cloud orders.
- is Ampere Computing still competitive in server chips
- Ampere's Arm cloud chip share has already fallen from over 20% to 18.2% as AWS Graviton, Azure Cobalt, and Google Axion give cloud providers their own in-house alternatives, squeezing the fabless business model Ampere depends on.
- Any AI accelerator startup outside Nvidia, AMD, and the big cloud in-house chips announcing a bankruptcy, distressed sale, or pivot to IP licensing
- Wolfspeed's quarterly revenue trend versus STMicroelectronics and Infineon's silicon carbide shipment volumes
- Cloud providers announcing new in-house server chip generations (Graviton, Cobalt, Axion successors)
