The call

Aerodrome leads Base trading by a wide margin, but it pays for that lead with token dilution and leans on a Coinbase relationship it does not control.

Aerodrome Finance lets people trade cryptocurrency on the Base network and takes a small fee from each swap. Right now it handles most of Base's trading volume, but it stays on top by giving out so many rewards to traders that it spends about $63 million more per year than it actually earns in fees. Uniswap (another trading platform) and Coinbase itself both offer the same service on Base and could take over if they wanted to. The biggest question that could change everything: Coinbase has been quietly steering its customers to Aerodrome, but there is no written deal keeping them there, so Coinbase could switch its customers to Uniswap or keep them on Coinbase's own platform instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could route trades across DEXs automatically, but no specific AI product targets Aerodrome's liquidity pools yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase and Uniswap. Coinbase owns the retail flow feeding Aerodrome and can redirect it to Uniswap or its own product anytime, no contract stops this. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep liquidity pools and habit: traders and protocols already route through Aerodrome, and switching costs are real even if the Coinbase relationship is not.
What would change this call
Coinbase formalizes or drops a routing preference for Aerodrome after the Sept 2026 Aero merger. Shows whether Aerodrome's key distribution edge is contractual or just informal and revocable.
Aerodrome's Base DEX volume share moves below or stays above ~50-57% by early 2027. Indicates whether Uniswap or others are actually taking share on Base.
Post-merger emissions (~$163M/yr) versus protocol revenue (~$100-165M/yr) reported over two quarters. Shows whether token dilution keeps subsidizing activity or the gap closes.
Key numbers
  • Base DEX volume share: 57-61% (2026-07-18)
  • TVL down over 80% from Dec 2024 peak (2026-07-18)
  • Emissions ~$163M/yr exceed revenue ~$100M/yr (2026-07-21)
Named risks
  • Annualized emissions (~$163M) exceed revenue (~$100M), funding growth via token dilution. Severity: high
  • TVL collapsed over 80% from Dec 2024 peak, signaling mercenary liquidity flight risk. Severity: high
  • Coinbase retail routing is informal alignment, not contractual, and could be redirected at will. Severity: high
  • Aero merger (targeted Sept 2026) carries token re-basing and cross-chain execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Recurring frontend/DNS attacks; second breach occurred Nov 2025 after a 2023 incident. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Aerodrome Finance profitable?
Not durably. As of mid-2026, Aerodrome's annualized token emissions (~$163M) exceed its annualized fee revenue (~$100M), meaning growth is subsidized by AERO dilution rather than organic profit, per a June 10, 2026 analysis.
Who owns Aerodrome Finance?
Aerodrome has no equity owners; it's a decentralized protocol governed by the Aerodrome Foundation via veAERO token holders, with core development by Dromos Labs led by CEO Alexander Cutler, per a June 16, 2026 token transparency filing.
Could AI replace Aerodrome Finance?
No. Aerodrome's July 2026 'Predictive Allocation' feature is built to let AI trading agents participate in directing liquidity incentives as users, not to automate away the protocol itself; its liquidity depth and veAERO lock-in remain structural, not algorithmic.
Who is Aerodrome's biggest competitor?
Uniswap (V3/V4), already deployed on Base and competing directly for the same swap volume, is Aerodrome's primary rival, alongside Curve and Balancer; Aerodrome held roughly 57-61% of Base DEX volume as of July 18, 2026.
Is it safe to use Aerodrome Finance after the hacks?
Aerodrome's smart contracts have not been breached, but its frontend domain was hijacked via DNS attack in November 2025, causing roughly $700K-$1M in user phishing losses, the second such frontend breach after a 2023 incident.
What is the Aero merger and when does it launch?
Announced November 12, 2025, Aero unifies Aerodrome (Base) and Velodrome (Optimism) into one cross-chain protocol; AERO holders get 94.5% of the new token, VELO holders 5.5%, with full launch targeted for September 2026.
