The call

AeroVironment is growing fast on real contracts, but a restated filing, a fraud suit, and hungry AI-native rivals are all live at once.

AeroVironment makes loitering munitions and drone systems used by the U.S. military and 55 other countries, with about 60,000 systems already fielded and a $2.7 billion backlog of orders. The company is hard to replace because its Switchblade drones have real combat history and are already in the military's official programs, but newer rivals like Anduril, Shield AI, and Rheinmetall are winning head-to-head competitions with newer technology and more funding, and AeroVironment is also wrestling with accounting restatements and a fraud lawsuit that could hurt investor confidence and access to capital. The biggest question is whether AeroVironment can keep control of its autonomous drone software or whether it gets forced to buy that technology from outside companies instead, because losing software superiority would make it even easier for competitors to take market share.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anduril Industries (Bolt-M, full-stack autonomy) and Shield AI (Hivemind, V-BAT). Both rivals push in-house autonomy software that could replace AV's manually piloted loitering munitions and ISR drones. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Rheinmetall (FV-014 loitering munition). Rheinmetall's FV-014 is a live competitor to Switchblade in NATO procurement, backed by Europe's largest defense budget growth. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Combat-proven Switchblade with 60,000+ fielded systems in 55+ countries and $2.7-3.1B backlog lock customers into AV's programs of record.
What would change this call
SCAR program recompete outcome under fixed-price terms is announced. Shows whether AV keeps or loses a ~$1.7B program to rivals like Anduril or Shield AI.
Mayhem 10 wins or loses a program of record against Anduril Bolt-M or Shield AI X-BAT. Shows whether AV's next-gen loitering munition can hold ground against funded rivals.
Securities class action reaches settlement or trial after the July 27, 2026 lead-plaintiff deadline. Shows whether the governance and restatement crisis is contained or widens.

Questions people ask
Is AeroVironment profitable in 2026?
AeroVironment posted FY2026 (ended April 30, 2026) revenue of about $2.0 billion, up 141% year over year, largely from the BlueHalo acquisition, but it also recorded a $151.3 million goodwill impairment in March 2026 tied to its lost SCAR program, clouding underlying margins.
Could AI replace AeroVironment's drone targeting technology?
AeroVironment is building AI-driven target recognition into Switchblade and its AV_Halo command software, but for its Mayhem 10 swarm drone (unveiled April 15, 2026) it outsourced autonomy algorithms to Applied Intuition and Parry Labs, risking its own software IP being commoditized by third parties.
Who is AeroVironment's biggest competitor right now?
Shield AI beat AeroVironment for an up to $800 million Navy V-BAT ISR contract slot around July 6, 2026, while Anduril and Rheinmetall are also contesting loitering munition and autonomy business; Rheinmetall signed a multi billion euro European framework deal for its FV-014 munition.
Who owns AeroVironment?
AeroVironment is a publicly traded company on NASDAQ under ticker AVAV with no controlling parent. After its BlueHalo acquisition closed May 1, 2025, legacy AV shareholders held about 60.5% of the combined company and BlueHalo equity holders about 39.5%.
Did AeroVironment lose the SCAR government contract?
Yes. AeroVironment lost its sole-source position on the roughly $1.7 billion Space Force SCAR satellite communications program after a January 2026 stop-work order and a March 2026 reopening to competitors, triggering a $151.3 million goodwill impairment.
What is AeroVironment's contract backlog as of mid-2026?
As of July 21, 2026, AeroVironment reported funded backlog of $1.1 to $1.2 billion and total backlog of roughly $2.7 to $3.1 billion, reflecting demand for Switchblade munitions and the P550 eVTOL program despite recent contract losses.
