The call

Almanac.io shut down with no active product, team, or revenue, after AI and larger platforms absorbed its core workflow.

Almanac was a tool for teams to work together on documents asynchronously, storing templates and shared information in one place. It was easy for Microsoft, Google, and Atlassian to copy this feature into their much larger products (Loop, Workspace, Confluence), and AI assistants like ChatGPT made the core job of template management and document upkeep automatic and free. The company raised around $45 million to $50 million but never generated enough revenue to matter, so the founder moved on to a different company called Blaze AI in mid-2023, and Almanac officially shut down on January 31, 2025.

Why
01
AI pressure: Notion AI, Google Workspace AI, Confluence AI. Generative AI already commoditized templating and wiki workflows before the shutdown; there is no product left for AI to eat. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Loop/SharePoint), Google Workspace, Atlassian Confluence. These platforms shipped native async doc features with distribution Almanac never had, then the company folded. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent, the product and team are gone.
What would change this call
Any relaunch of almanac.io product under original or new ownership. Would indicate the shutdown was not final and a moat attempt is being retried.
News coverage confusing defunct almanac.io with YC-2026 codealmanac.com or Blaze AI. Would confirm brand collision is actively misleading buyers, recruiters, or press.
Investor disclosure from Tiger Global, Floodgate, or General Catalyst on the Almanac write-off. Would clarify the actual financial outcome of the ~$45-50M raised.

Questions people ask
Is Almanac still in business in 2026?
No. Almanac Labs formally shut down its almanac.io product on January 31, 2025, per its own 'Go Forward' notice, telling users to export their documents. Founder Adam Nathan had already pivoted the team to a new company, Blaze AI, in mid-2023.
Who owns Almanac and what happened to the company?
Almanac Labs was privately VC-backed, founded 2019 by Adam Nathan, Dan Bartlett, and N. Taylor Thompson. It raised roughly $45M-$50M total, including a $34M Series A led by Tiger Global in September 2021, before shutting down the product on January 31, 2025.
Could AI replace Almanac's product?
The question is moot since Almanac shut down January 31, 2025. Generative AI tools like Notion AI and Google Workspace AI commoditized templated docs and wiki workflows after 2023, and Almanac itself argued in May 2023 that AI wasn't the answer, shortly before its founder pivoted away entirely.
Was Almanac profitable before it shut down?
No public evidence shows profitability. The company raised at roughly a $150M valuation per founder interview but, according to that same account, could not grow revenue into that valuation, prompting the mid-2023 pivot to Blaze AI and the eventual January 31, 2025 shutdown.
Who is Almanac's biggest competitor?
While operating, Almanac was compared to Notion, Coda, Confluence, Google Docs/Workspace, and HackMD per CB Insights (2023-05-03). As of 2025 the product is defunct, so it no longer competes; those incumbents absorbed the async-docs category.
What is the difference between Almanac and Blaze AI?
Almanac was the original async document-collaboration startup, founded 2019, shut down January 31, 2025. Blaze AI is the same founder Adam Nathan's pivot company, launched mid-2023, building AI marketing content tools, a completely different product and category.
