The call

Search and Cloud are both growing while AI features expand usage, so the feared AI cannibalization has not shown up in the numbers yet.

Alphabet makes money by showing ads when people search the web. It owns the search engine most people use (Google), the Android phone system that comes with Google built in, and Chrome browser that defaults to Google search. These give Alphabet about 20 billion dollars a year in search ads. ChatGPT and similar AI tools could one day answer questions without sending people to websites, which would hurt Alphabet's ad clicks. But right now, people are searching more, not less, even as AI gets built into Google itself, so ads are still growing. The biggest threat is if the government forces Google to stop being the default search engine on phones and browsers, which could happen by 2028.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI ChatGPT and Perplexity answer engines. Answer engines threaten to replace search clicks, but AI Mode and AI Overviews are adding query volume, not cutting it, so far. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No single big company is currently taking share from Alphabet's core search or cloud business. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Chrome, Android, and default-search deals worth about $20B a year lock in the traffic that funds everything else.
What would change this call
Search paid clicks growth turns negative YoY in a future quarterly report. Would show AI answer engines are cannibalizing core search instead of adding to it.
Gemini 4 launch (Nov-Dec 2026) benchmarked against OpenAI/Anthropic frontier models. Weak results would undercut Alphabet's AI-leadership claim and Cloud deal pipeline.
DOJ antitrust remedy ruling on Chrome/index/data sharing. A structural remedy would directly weaken Alphabet's distribution moat.
Key numbers
  • Q2 2026 revenue: $119.8 billion, up 24% YoY (2026-06-30)
  • Search ad revenue up 17% YoY despite AI Mode (2026-06-30)
  • Google Cloud revenue up 82% YoY (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • DOJ pushing DC Circuit to strengthen antitrust remedies could force structural changes to distribution deals. Severity: high
  • Negative free cash flow (-$5.9B in Q2 2026) amid rising $195-205B capex guidance pressures margins. Severity: medium
  • Gemini 4, targeted for Nov-Dec 2026, could land weaker than OpenAI or Anthropic frontier models. Severity: medium
  • SpaceX stake lockup expirations from August 2026 could swing mark-to-market earnings volatility. Severity: low
  • Long-term shift to AI answer engines could eventually erode paid-click search monetization. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
What is Alphabet's biggest risk?
The main watch item is AI chat tools like ChatGPT and Claude pulling search-style queries away from Google, with AdSense network revenue down 4% year over year to $6.97B in Q1 2026 as AI Overviews cut click-through rates 34-61%. A second item to track is whether Gemini 3.5 Pro ships by the end of 2026 after missing an earlier June 2026 target.
Is Alphabet in financial trouble?
No. Alphabet reported Q1 2026 revenue of $109.90B, up about 21.8-22% year over year, with net income of $62.6B, up 81% year over year, as of April 29, 2026. Its market cap stood at $4.33 trillion on July 20, 2026, and Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year over year to $20.03B in the same quarter.
Is Alphabet at risk from AI?
Alphabet faces AI-driven pressure already, since chat tools from OpenAI and Anthropic are rerouting some search queries and its own AI Overviews cut AdSense publisher click-through rates by 34-61% as of Q1 2026, with AdSense network revenue down 4% year over year to $6.97B. Even so, Alphabet holds a roughly 14% stake in Anthropic worth about $135 billion as of July 2026, a position that hedges against losing ground in AI models even as it competes with them.
Who are Alphabet's biggest competitors?
Alphabet competes with Microsoft in cloud and AI, with Google Cloud revenue up 63% year over year to $20.03B in Q1 2026, and with Tesla in autonomous driving scale, where Waymo runs 3,500-4,000 vehicles versus Tesla's roughly 20-vehicle Austin fleet as of July 2026. OpenAI and Anthropic compete directly in AI models, while Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS compete for the same cloud workloads.
Can a big tech giant just copy what Alphabet does?
Not easily. Alphabet's combined control of data, distribution defaults, and its own TPU chips makes duplicating Search, Cloud, YouTube, and Waymo together difficult in one motion, as of July 2026. Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year over year to $20.03B in Q1 2026 and Waymo runs 3,500-4,000 vehicles versus Tesla's roughly 20-vehicle Austin fleet, even as Microsoft and Amazon push hard in cloud and EU regulators pursue a pending Chrome divestiture case.
What should I watch next for Alphabet?
Two dated items are worth tracking: whether Gemini 3.5 Pro publicly ships by the end of 2026 after missing an earlier June 2026 deadline, and whether Google Network ad revenue declines year over year again in Q2 2026 results expected around August 2026. The Q2 2026 earnings call on July 22, 2026 is expected to address Cloud growth, the Anthropic stake accounting, and the Gemini timeline.
